Stick with it but take it slow and easy. I had lower back surgery (L4-L5) and it took a full year before the pain down my leg finally abated. I gave up playing soccer and tennis but by the end of the first year I had got my qualifications as a soccer ref and was refereeing young kids, wearing a back brace for support during the games. I was very conscientious in doing the back exercises prescribed by my PT. Took up yoga, and by the end of the 2nd year was refereeing adult and youth soccer games (90 mins of running around). This was all 19 years ago and I now play tennis, work out in the gymn, ride my bike etc etc
Good luck - but be patient, you have the rest of your life ahead of you.
PS During the recovery years I put on 35lbs, but shed it all once I was back to exercising fully

Thanks Alan. I am very impatient during this recovery period. The lower leg pain is annoying, thats for sure. I want to cycle, workout, and other things again and I get annoyed at the setbacks. Great for you that surgery and time were on your side. I wanted to enjoy my retirement, not sit on the rocking chair on the porch...LOL

126 pounds I started doing WW informally on Sunday and also started walking on the treadmill 2 miles per day. Goal weight between 105 and 110.

Wow, had a set back with the bronchitis AGAIN. Back to the doc. On a second round of prednisone and also steroid inhaler. Geesh. I cannot wait to feel better! Haven't tried working out again, and will wait until I am completely better before trying again.

So, the fat percentage is going down, but the weight is holding roughly steady. Sounds about like what I'd expect when I'm exercising more but not really dieting.
Shoulder continues to improve and I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow, so I should be getting a better idea on what I should and should not be doing. Hopefully I can start shoulder exercises and start building my muscles back up.

Nice progress this week. I got back on a good walking schedule. Took the mutt on a 4 mile hike Monday and we walked 9 holes yesterday. Golf course was closed as the greens were covered. Might be wearing the mutt out though, when we got home I gave her a bath and then fed her. She headed to bed at 7:00pm and got up with me at 8:00am today. Fed her, let her out for her morning call, then back to bed.

I haven't posted to this thread in about 18 months, but I started the process at 190+ and just hit 180. In three more pounds I'll be at my 1977 high-school weight, but with about 20 pounds more muscle. Hypothetically I've ditched at least 25 pounds of fat.
This is the first time I've studied the long-term changes of weight loss. I still wake up hungry every day but I no longer eat past satiety. Lots of fruits, veggies, & fish during the day. Even if I carb-load at dinner, we still have taekwondo 3x nights/week to keep me from overeating. Other nights I stop eating by 7 PM. One trigger/comfort food at a time, I've cut out every junk but chocolate-- and that's under much better control.
My tastes have changed. Almost everything with sugar or aspartame is too sweet and I don't want much of it. When I get the munchies I actually have enough cognitive brain function to reach for broccoli or fruit instead of bread or peanut butter. Much less binging.
The real weight loss has been fat. I've discovered a couple bottles of a six-pack and I'm getting more. I've built up muscle around my knees (support for torn ligaments & damaged cartilage) and I've put a lot of definition into my chest/shoulder muscles from all the taekwondo pushups and surfing. I don't measure bodyfat but everything else is thinner and the layers of subcutaneous fat are disappearing. All clothing fits much more loosely, especially around the waist.
Last weekend I went to our dojang's black-belt test with a half-gallon of water (four pounds) and four pieces of fruit. Six hours later I'd emptied everything (plus a couple pieces of pizza) and still sweated off three pounds. I wouldn't recommend this as a weight-loss program but I think I've gained the self-confidence to control my binges and choices.
Over the next year I'm going to cut back the chocolate to a tablespoon or two a day and see if there's any sugar (cereal) left to cut from my diet. More fiber, more veggies, and less fat & carbs at dinner. I hope I don't regret reading this in a year or so, but in 2010 I may be down to 175 and doing just as many pushups & situps.

No weight loss to report. I was on vacation and strained a back muscle which has made exercising difficult. I'll guess I'll be happy with not gaining weight. Onward to next week.

If, by informally you mean following the rules but not going to the meetings, then you should do just fine.
Whenever I get over 180 lbs I follow the WW rules. (I paid for 2 subsidized 8-week sessions at work about 6 years ago and it worked great for me so I kept on following the new lifestyle of eating and exercise)
