Just saw the excellent PBS health show that oldbabe posted. Didn't want to hijack that thread, so here is a link to medical vacations in Thailand. This has probably been discussed before, but I found this particular link interesting because they have a "Real Cost" link in which you can get a range of cost for typical procedures.

For example, I chose one of the more complicated ones, a heart bypass and got a median real cost in US dollars of about $25,000. A hip replacement is around $13,000, and a knee replacement is $10,000.

If the doctors are competent, for someone isn't covered by their insurance company this is a much better alternative than declaring bankruptcy.
