Re: MEGA Health and Life Insurance Co.

As an insurance agent, I have seen a lot of complaints against this company. I do not sell their products. In addition to individual insurance, they specialize in association plans, which are passed off as "cheaper" than other group plans, but in all reality, there isn't much difference between association plans and other types of group health plans, pricewise. (at least in the State of Colorado). Don't know much about other states....

Hi
Does anybody know anything about Chesapeake insurance through health markets? They have the same address as MEGA except for the zip code, MEGA's is 76182 and Chesapeake is 76180. I start with Chesapeake on april 1 and this thing about MEGA really bugs me.

I think they are all subsidiaries of the same company:

Look, I would be careful about these carriers. As an insurance agent, I have had serious complaints about BOTH Mega Life and Midwest National Life Insurance Company of Tenessee. I don't know about Chesapeake. Basically, I would read through your policy summary very carefully. Read all of the fine print in your certificate of coverage. Where they can get you is with upper limits on certain services...such as....upper limits or annual maximums that the insurance carrier will pay for certain services like outpatient care, prescription drugs, etc... There can also be fine print limiting coverage for Cancer and other complicated illnessess. Check out the coverage for transplants, too. Also, make sure that there are plenty of local physicians in the "network". Check out the coverage for ambulance and flight for life. Look into the coverage for mental health and routine office visits. These are all areas where insurance companies will cut corners on what I call, "limited-benefit" health insurance plans. Of course, they are better than having no coverage at all, but if you want the best coverage for the price, it's buyer beware.

What I dont' like about Mega Life is that their sales people present the lower priced plans as if it they are full-coverage, top-of-the-line health insurance plans, and people don't find out that the coverage is "limited" until it is too late. How else do you think they are able to keep their rates down? They make it sound like they are out for your best interest, and their prices are lower because all the other insurance carriers are really just ripping you off. But in reality, they HAVE to cut corners to keep their prices lower. The benefits are limited as compared to a more reputable carrier such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Sure, Mega has the ability to add all of the "bells and whistles" to their healthplans, but by the time you do that, it's usually more expensive than a Blue Cross and Blue Shield as well.

Re: MEGA Health and Life Insurance Co.

I had a Mega sales woman contact me shortly before I retired. She was very pushy and said that they are the group that insures Walmart. She was trying to put down other carriers and close on me(sale).
I checked them out and it was not a clean record....I went with Aetna - and it was $100 less per month for the same basic coverage.
