They don't freshen the air, just kill the sense of smell. The place can still stink.

This is my view also. I get a cleaner to come a clean my place once every few weeks, she does a great job, well worth $60.

She started using the air fresheners when their old dog was on his last legs and was not smelling too good. The dog went away but she never pulled the plug on the air fresheners.

I suspect, but of course cannot prove, it is the latter.
He was a bit of a nerd but he gave an excellent talk (quite technical) which was free and during which he tried to sell us nothing. I was not impressed with his website but I definitely enjoyed listening to him in person. He and my primary care physician sometimes work together to do specialized testing when my doc gets tough patients. But then my PCP is a bit different than most in that he thinks statins (for most people) are a dangerous drug.
