South Carolina Health Insurance

Any advice on buying Health Insurance in South Carolina for me and my wife. Wife does not work and cheapest program available through Mega corp after I retire is $30k/ year.

Any Thoughts? Thanks!

Move to a cheaper state, did you factor in 30 Thousand into your retirement budget? That sounds really high.

BCBSSC is the only company offering on-exchange or off-exchange plans. All of their plans are EPO. Their individual market plans are no longer connected to the nation-wide BlueCard Provider Network as of 2017. They will make a payment for out-of-network emergencies but you can be balanced billed in most states. You may want to consider keeping the retiree plan if it has a broad network and you plan to travel out of state frequently. Their individual plans are also age rated, meaning the premiums increase each year for both age and inflation. This assumes they continue to offer individual plans in the future. See the HealthSherpa link in the post above for a list of current plans.

Unless I misunderstand, EPO is suboptimal at best. If you need to see a specialist you are limited to a particular network. So say, you have cancer or heart surgery and want to go to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville FL you are out of luck.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for all the feedback. The EPO approach concerns me. Feel like we need freedom to go where we want for care - especially for big stuff.
