Veterans Administration Hospitals

My dad has entered an independent living complex and is using the VA for his medical. He says he signed away his Medicare plan when he opted for VA and it would cost a lot of money to get it back. He is convinced that he must stay near a VA hospital forever. So he lives near a VA hospital but it is 2000 miles from all his family. We would like for him to live closer so we can assist him. The problem is none of three children live in a city with a VA hospital. There is one about 2 hours from me and another about 1.5 hours from my brother and sister. We would like for him to relocate nearer to the area where one of us lives. There is a VA clinic in each of our hometowns. My question is how does one handle emergencies and the constantly ordered testing at the hospital that come up? Can a vet go to the local emergency room and the VA pay for it like Medicare? I know that veterans live all over the US not just in the few cities where the hospitals are.
Thanks,
2fer

Non-VA facility FAQ

Hope this link may help:

Emergency Care at Non-VA Facilities Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) (Health Care Eligibility)

Do I need to get approval before going to the emergency room?

No. If you are an eligible veteran, a VA facility is not feasibly available, and you believe your health or life is in immediate danger, report directly to the closest emergency room. You, your representative, or the treating facility should then contact the nearest VA as soon as possible (within 48 hours) to arrange a transfer to VA care, if hospitalization is required.

How long will I stay in the private hospital?

If you are hospitalized, VA will be in regular contact with your physician at the private hospital. As soon as your condition stabilizes, VA will arrange to transport you to a VA, or VA-designated facility.

What if the hospital bills me for services?

If you are billed for emergency care services, contact your local VA health care facility and representative will assist you in resolving the issue.

Thanks One Zero. I printed some info out from there and mailed if off to him. Maybe this will help him make a decision.
