What to do after COBRA ends ?

I have a good friend was "involuntarily separated" (RIFTed, fired, you pick a term, he is unemployed) over a year ago, after about 25 years. 12 months severance pay, 6 month insurance and "Good Bye".

His COBRA is about to run out.

Here is the problem. He has serious eye problems and foot problems from many years of uncontrolled diabetes.

Once COBRA ends, what can he do ? (Personally, I think he is "un-insurable" ; he has been ignoring this issue along with re-employment like he did his diabetes)

His cobra should last for at least 18 months, I think. After that, he should be able to use the healthcare portability laws to get insured. But he might not care much for the offerings/prices he gets from the insurers. He may also have access to the state high risk insurance pool. Also might not care much for the offerings/prices there either.

Tell your friend to look at the information on health insurance rights at Health Insurance Consumer Guides. That will tell him what his options are for getting coverage in his state.
