If I could do it all in one go, I'd have been in the Olympics or Ripley's Believe it or Not! But alas, I cannot. I am just an overweight 64-year-old woman who has led a very sedentary academic life. And double alas, I don't have the patience to lift a 1 lb weight 31,200 times (but think of the endurance if I could! wow...)

2 sets of 10 lifts on each of 20 weight lifting machines; average weight lifted on all machines was 78 pounds.

2 x 10 x 20 x 78 = 31,200 pounds = 15.6 tons.

My MWF workout routine begins with 5-10 minutes of stretches at the gym's stretching station.
Then I spend about 40-45 minutes completing 2 sets of 10 reps on each of the following weight machines (today's weight settings are listed):

1. Keiser triceps pushdown, 120 pounds
2. Keiser biaxial chest press, 40 pounds
3. Keiser upper back machine, 60 pounds
4. Keiser back extension machine, 130 pounds
5. Nautilus compound row, 95 pounds
6. Nautilus lateral pull down, 75 pounds
7. Nautilus chest press, 55 pounds
8. Nautilus abdominal machine, 95 pounds
9. Nautilus arm curl, 40 pounds
10. Nautilus triceps extension, 60 pounds
11. Cybex leg extension, 40 pounds
12. Cybex leg curl, 100 pounds
13. Cybex calf rotator, 150 pounds
14. Cybex hip abductor, 80 pounds
15. Cybex hip adductor, 130 pounds
16. Cybex abdominal machine, 95 pounds
17. Cybex seated row, 75 pounds
18. Cybex arm extension, 60 pounds
19. Cybex fly, 30 pounds
20. Cybex overhead press, 30 pounds

The best I did, (don't do it in the winter), was 7375 (upward) steps, and I weigh 170lbs......so can I say ~ 627 tons?

Your absolutely amazing, a true freak of nature (I mean that in a good way) Perhaps you need to be considered for Ripleys Beleive it or Not or the Guiness Book of World Records.

I do about 5 tons on upper body day, but that's 45 reps, not 400...

Looking more like a plain old freak right now........along with the previously mentioned black armpits/malaria on other threads, here's a cut & paste of raw notes I made for my dr, with whom I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon:

"Mexico Jan 8 to Jan 15

Minor sore spot on one toe of left foot - slightly infected

Noticed black armpits a couple of days before leaving Mexico

Jan 15 - nosebleed - visited hospital in Mexico and given medication for high blood pressure

Jan 16 to Jan 20 - nosebleeds everyday - sometimes 2 or 3 times a day......visited Belleville Emergency...doctors had no idea what the black armpits indicated, nor did they apparently investigate same.

Started taking a diuretic for blood pressure

blood tests indicated possible B12 deficiency anemia**

Feb 6 - jowl and lips on left side were swollen and lips were numb
Swelling and numbness lasted ~ 24 hrs

Swelling of right side about a week later - same symptoms as before - lasted about 24 hours

Feb 18 Worked out in the afternoon - had to stop after about 28 minutes - felt weak
Thought it was malaria (contracted it about 50 years ago - have had attacks ~ 18 to 24 months apart for 5 decades)
Symptoms: fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, weakness. Very weak, could barely sit up.
Overall the symptoms were almost identical to previous attacks.....however this time they were accompanied by/or preceded the blistering and the rather extreme swelling of the left foot*. *This is the foot that was run over 5 1/2 years ago.

Feb 19 Still feverish and very weak. Left foot very swollen and sore to walk on.

Feb 20 Most of the symptoms had subsided but still feeling very weak. Noticed several blisters (on chest, side, under the eye and under arms), started as small round bumps - the largest was about 1 inch in diameter. After a couple of hours, they increased in size - the largest was about 4 inches in diameter. They started to fade around 6:30 PM. They were not itchy or painful. Elevated left foot while sleeping, which provided a modicum of relief - however the foot is still swollen and tender....but not as swollen as before.

Feb 21 a.m. blisters all around buttocks and back of legs, inner arms.

Is it possible that all or most of the above situations, including the black armpits, but possibly excluding the malarial symptoms, are interrelated and perhaps attributable to a parasite contracted in Mexico? Online research we have self conducted suggests that a 4-6 week time frame is common in such instances, and this fits the scenario."

**The B12 deficiency might also be attributable to a parasitic infection.

Being a freak ain't for the faint of heart.

Nemo, Thats awful, so sorry to hear what you are going through. B12 deficiency should be easy enough to correct, but don't let that go on for too long as it can lead to other issues. Get well my friend.

Nemo, that is absolutely terrifying. Maybe you should consider seeking out an M.D. who specializes in Tropical Medicine, right away. Honestly that is a very esoteric specialty and I doubt that the average family doctor or internist would be the right person to see.

HFWR, my workout is pretty non-standard and I doubt anybody would recommend it. I made it up based on the time honored, "Hey, that feels right, I'm a-gonna do it that way!" method.

I have three criteria. Still being a wage slave, time efficiency is important. Lifting heavier for fewer reps is one recommendation I've seen for building size and strength, which fits the time constraint Requirement. Another recommendation I've seen is to focus on exercises that involve several muscle groups. So, bench press, lat pulldowns, and seated presses are the only upper body I do. They of course work chest, lats, and shoulders, but also give the arms a good workout as well. I found I made more progress, and saved time, by skipping bicep and tricep isolation. Plus, I tire less, and recover faster as well.

I only do leg presses for lower body, plus some deadlifts for overall strength.

Looking more to add bulk and strength than to be "toned", per se, so this routine works better for that purpose.

I agree...but with the Canadian system one has to be referred to a specialist by one's GP, so it's an indirect process.........by which time the symptoms may have disappeared, or be lying dormant, as parasites are wont to do for self preservation, and won't be identifiable until the next occurrence.

I'll take it one step at a time.

Tweaked my workout again after my last chiro appt. He is a workout nut and noted that studies are now showing that small bursts of cardio are better than the "long slow distance" once advised. So I have gone to 3 days a week of running 5k's with qtr mile bursts, and lifting 3 days a week. ...but I have gained 15 lbs...

It was leg day this morning and I decided to push myself a little on dead lifts. Usually I do 3x10 @ 225, but today I did 1x10 @ 135, 1x10 @ 225, and then ramped up a bit to 2x2 @ 295. Funny how just an extra 70 lbs makes DLs so much tougher. Think I could have done more, but didn't want to push my luck and pull a muscle.

On Friday I lifted 16.2 tons at the gym.

Today was one of my days off from the gym, but I got the urge to loosen my purse strings a little. That evolved into a fun and ridiculously exhausting single-handed furniture moving extravaganza in order to make room for the new 65" TV that I plan to get for my home gym. I shuffled some big, heavy furniture from room to room, and then hung and re-hung paintings and a new tapestry that I got. Finally everything was rearranged and in place. When everything looked just the way I wanted it to look, with a nice big empty space left over for the TV, then it was time to order the TV stand and call it a day.

It's times like this when I really appreciate the beneficial effects of weight lifting for a woman living by herself. I could do everything that needed to be done, all by myself.

I don't know, did I need him? For what?

He was over at my house earlier today, when I needed his company and great conversation, so he was right there. After he left, I decided to move the furniture. I didn't need him for that.

Finally got my Precor recumbent exercise bike and am trying out a different program each day. Working on getting my heart rate into the aerobic zone - am at the lower level of the zone or 70% of maximum heart rate. Is easier to monitor it with the built in heart rate sensor.
