I camp for 6 weeks every summer and also lose weight.

The reason in my case is that my activity level goes way up (swimming, walking, chopping wood) and my food intake drops (too lazy to leave the beach to go make lunch).

Plus it takes concentrated effort even to make a cup of coffee: walk to water pump, pump water, carry pail, chop wood, make fire, heat water.

In other words, live like our ancestors. Write that book!

Another data point: Lena and I saw this same phenomenon after our one-week hotel-based trip. That is, we didn't camp, we stayed at cushy hotels, and still both lost 1-2 pounds.

We ate a lot of amazing foods, although we always kept the carbs very low (I didn't eat the pita bread here for example).

Perhaps we snacked less, but we did eat a lot of nuts and chocolates that we brought. We did do a lot of walking around and biking, but there wasn't any tent setting up or firewood gathering or walking long distances to the bathroom.

So, my best guess is that less sitting at the piano and keyboard was the most important factor.
