Are the two mutually exclusive? I re-balance using metrics rather than a set schedule. This becomes a type of timing. One of the issues that I have with target year funds is that they re-balance too frequently for me.

Tactical or Strategic... IMO it depends on how active (time and effort) someone is willing to spend on the management of their portfolio.

IMO - if one is not well acquainted with the issues (and has control of their financial emotions)... they should avoid tactical. However, I also believe that a well executed tactical approach can out perform the strategic approach. But to do it... one has to have a good method and not be prone to emotion based decisions! By tactical, I mean based on things like business cycle, P/E, etc... not short-term trading or riding the big MO!

The Bogleheads site (or google : Core 4) explains (in way more detail than I could in a single post) the historical and mathematical reasons that allocating your investments in four low cost (cost- expense ratio) is a primary indicator of the success of future returns. Similar to target retirement, but you do the balancing once a year or whenever you feel your allocations are out of 'balance'. Total Stock market index; total international stock index, total bond index. The 4th is up to you-some people believe REIT fund should go there. In bonds, maybe some TIPS. But all low cost.
Individual picking of stocks or funds or funds sectors rarely works - how do you know when to sell or buy ? How would the average investor know more than Wall Street?
But Target Retirement funds are still way better than trying to game the market. Watching tv, reading kiplinger....everybody already knows that info and the markets have already responded to it. We the investors lose (esp with expense ratios over 1.0!)

Read them, invest, sleep soundly (sleep soundly is a big one for me).

When the markets seemed like we were losing and losing more, in my gut, I felt demoralized. That was a sign from my emotional guide to money management. I increased equities (U.S. small and mid cap funds) with nearly all of our money. The only thing I held back on was a emergency reserve. That was not a smart allocation, but it paid off. Last week, we moved some of the money into a total stock international fund. More will be moved on the Ides of May. The trouble with a big allocation is that I have to be slow in moving back or I will owe my rich, but broke Uncle Sam too much money. Money porn tells me what NOT to buy. I do much better than trend investing, but giving all my bubble back when it pops.

Is Piggly Wiggly still around? They closed most of Piggly Wigglys in Central Texas along with S&H Green Stamps back in late 70's and early 80's. I didn't think there were in business anymore since Walmart also carries groceries.

I forgot to use google like everyone else. I reckon they are still around except only one store in entire Long Star State.
