Looks like every eight years -- 2000, 2008, (so far) 2016 -- Mister Market vomits up a lot of its past gains. So it appears in the next wave I can ride until late 2023, before the bear market of 2024.

You are on to something. You know all those studies that backtest when is the best time to rebalance? Well, one of them will come up with "every 8 years using the US presidential election years." There is already one that says "every 4 years using the US presidential election years", but I guess quite a few presidents serve for 2 terms, so that probably got messed up.
