I've been listening to Cramer the last couple of days talking about windmill plays and must admit it makes sense. On a regular basis I see trucks driving down the highway carrying the rotors and blades.
From what I've looked at OTTR and AMN. I know Cramer mentioned TRN among others, but didn't like them as much.
Just wanted to see if I'd missed any worth looking at.

Trinity is a pretty good company. I have it from $27. But this party is moving along pretty well, There might be more low risk entry points. Cramer isn't usually the early bird.

That said, alternate energy in general and wind in particular have many of the traits that could feed into a fad, and fads are good for awake investors.

For a low risk possibility with worldwide infrastructure and alernate energy exposure and solid management, look at GE. ;)

Ha

Do you mean like this?

Looking at those companies, I get the impression that wind is a pretty small part of their business. They seem more like general infrastructure plays.

That said, they look like solid companies selling at reasonable prices.

Wind is a small part of their business - I keep looking at G.E. and FPL periodically but have not been compelled to buy. Remember though - I have a strong dividend bias.

heh heh heh -

Efficient market theory dictates that if YOU heard about it, it is too late.

FAN is a new ETF for Wind plays.

Jason Neault submits:By Jason NeaultThe much anticipated First Trust ISE Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSEArca: FAN - News) launched this week with healthy trading volume and a tight spread. Renewable energy has been a hot topic as of late, especially wind energy because of its low cost, and high efficiency. With the launch of this new fund, investors now have a chance to profit from companies in the wind energy business, as well as companies that will be entering the space.

The First Trust ISE Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSEArca: FAN - News) will aim to track the ISE Global Wind Energy Index. The index is comprised of companies that provide goods and services to the wind energy industry, and companies €œdetermined to be significant participants in the wind energy industry despite not being exclusive to such industry€. In order to be considered for the index, the company must be engaged in some aspect of the wind energy industry such as manufacturing or design of machinery, distribution of materials, management of a wind farm, or distribution of wind generated electricity. The current top ten of the 52 holdings in the fund are as follows:

REpowersystems AG - 10.51%

Vestas Wind Systems - 10.28%

Gamesa - 8.81%

Hansen Transmissions - 6.80%

Japan Wind Dev. Co. - 5.13%

Babcock & Brown Wind Partners - 4.40%

Nordex AG - 4.34%

Theolia SA - 4.28%

Clipper Windpower - 2.94%

Gurit Holding AG - 2.81%

On a fundamental basis, the trailing P/E ratio for the fund is 25, and price to sales is around 2.2. The total net assets for the fund are around $9.1 million, but this is likely to balloon as more investors move into the fund. The expense ratio for the fund is 0.60%, and trades on the NYSE Arca exchange.

I found a cheap one yesterday. JUHL.

Art, thanks. Made a nice tidy sum this morning. $1.09 profit per share. Took forever to fill my order and forever to sell.

OTTR has been doing well lately.

I just started working in this sector. Wind energy has a lot of potential, but because Congress has not yet voted to extend the Production Tax Credit for this year, it is speculated that the production of wind turbine parts will slow down for a year or so. They will probably eventually extend it, like they have done the last few times that the PTC expired. There is a lot of uncertainty about the profitability of tower and blade production without the PTC.

It is a clean source of energy, with some growing pains. I haven't studied any of the numbers to see if the ETFs are good buys. Suspect there will be some small bubbles here and there, but the overall trend should be OK.

Probably a stupid question, but could someone explain something for me?

When I look up Vestas Wind Systems on the Copenhagen exchange (VWS.CO) it's trading at 616 DKK or $131 USD.

If I look it up on Scottrade (VWDRY:OTC) it's trading at $43.

On the other Euro exchanges (VWS.DU for example) it's trading at about 81 EUR or $128.

What's the deal on the price difference of company stock on different world exchanges?

Well OTTR is getting slammed today, but I think it's just a buying opportunity. I was buying it for the future as a longer term play. Sure wish I had sold it off first though.

In college, I actually got to tour the Vestas wind facility. If anyone has questions I can answer from my observations I'd be happy to.
