New to investing need help please

I am new to investing and have invested some money into stocks via scottrade. I have blue chips like Coke, Johnson controls, con ed, BP ect. I wanted to know if there was a good no nonsense video course I could buy or rent that would educate me on how it all works and give me a solid basic to moderate understanding of how it works. Thanks

I think you will find that most folks here use index/mutual funds to get an allocation of stocks/bonds they are comfortable with. This approach is very easy to understand. Depending on age and risk tolerance you need to decide what stock/bond % is right for you.

I think you will learn a lot by just reading the posts on this site. I know I have. And if you have a specific question, just ask. About 25 years ago, I subscribed to "Money" magazine and read it cover to cover for a few years. That helped me learn the basics, although IMHO, that magazine has gone downhill recently.

One of my favorites is the Boglehead's Guide to Investing. You can get many of these books from the library or buy them online used, very cheaply.

Read, read, read. No one cares as much about your financial health as you.

PS. Don't read Money or other financial porn. You will be chasing your tail. Been there, done that.

Read, read, and then read some more. Be very skeptical.

Don't forget your local library. Read every book that you can a couple of times as each author has a different perspective and different recommendations.

Until you determine that you are in either the "brilliant" or "lucky" tails of the distribution, you may want to invest your serious money like this:

You can use your play money for individual stocks for fun and telling stories to your friends until you gather enough data to decide your future path.

That would be an epic movie, if the videos exist. You're on the right path, trying to educate yourself as investments grow.

Morningstar.com has investment courses available for free. You could also load a few financial sites and watch videos on various subjects. Your challenge is putting it all together and making sense of it all.

You may be able to locate an online course for free at a university Site.

A fabulous podcast to listen to is "Jill On Money." It downloads to iTunes Saturday morning. Jill Schlesinger is a former CFP and doles out sound investment advice. Each week, she takes calls from a broad mix of callers (middle age looking to retire soon, elderly with SS and small nest egg, and young ins just starting out) and she has experts on too.

It is about all you will ever need to read.
