What would you do with $1 million in cash
This could be interesting.
If you suddenly found yourself with a million of cash that was not invested in bonds or stocks, what would you do with it given the current stock/bond market.

I would buy 10-12 houses in Memphis with gross rents totaling about $12,500 a month.

I'd invest it in the current stock/bond market.

I would dollar cost average 100k a month into my favorite bond fund until it was all invested. This would be a nice boost to my income.

I would put it in a money market holding fund and shop for dividend paying stocks that were relatively undervalued. Then I would selectively look for charities to donate to.

I would probably spend $25-50k upgrading things we enjoy and use regularly in our lives (replace kitchen cabinets at home, newer boat, boat in FL, etc.) and invest the rest.
Given that we have new cars in the last 12 months, I'm not totally sure that I could spend that much but it would be fun to try.
Probably value average in over 12-24 months.

I'd DCA into growth stocks, or equivalent ETFs, mostly US some international, guessing that will offer the best after-tax net return over the next decade or two.

Spend half on hookers and blow, $100,000 to a mix of charities, then waste the rest on half stocks and half bonds. I'd like to up my bond holdings a bit.

Take 300K out for spending (I am not sure what I would spend it on...) and invest the rest.

What first popped into my head was to get a 40 foot cat and a cabin on the water where I could dock it in Florida...some sleepy place, where I could hone my skipper skills.

Provide some economic outpatient care for our two adult children, and my wife's parents. Increase the price range of retirement housing we're looking at on Vancouver Island by $200k. Update our 7 year old vehicles, and invest the remaining $450k or so in CD's.

Invest same as the rest of the portfolio. Increase spending from outset of retirement.
(All it will take is to tell DW that she can always get the lie-flat seats across the pacific. That'll exhaust the drawdown of 1mill quickly enough. )

Have it sit in an insured savings account earning at least one percent or CDs when rates go up a bit. Don't trust bonds right now and already have 65 percent in equities. It's a nice safety net.

I'd give half of it to Frank, either all at once and incurring taxes or else at $14K/year to avoid taxes (I'd let him choose).
I'd invest my half at the same asset allocation as the rest of my portfolio.
Using the dividends from my half million, I'd start tipping deserving wait staff at restaurants with hundred dollar bills for ten dollar meals.

Since you likely frequent many of the same restaurants again and again, I can envision fist fights breaking out among the waitstaff to determine who will serve you.

We'd sure get great service!
Maybe I'd have to figure out a way to do it anonymously. Not sure how...
