Anyone got any travel planned?

I'm off for a week in Ottawa. Staying at nice hotel a block from Parliamentary Hill. Nothing special, just walking around, probably a couple sight seeing activities and enjoying the cooler weather.

Chateau Laurier? The Elgin? The Westin? All old haunts of mine. I love Ottawa.

Make sure to explore the Byward Market, walk or cycle along the Rideau Canal, especially the locks, and check out the museums and galleries.

Meadhb: Will do! I'm staying at the Lord Elgin Hotel, looking forward to seeing everything I can that week. Appreciate the "must sees".

They are wonderful terms! I imagine your fellow QM2 passengers have them in their vocabularies.

Some of them certainly do

Hanging around the casino area on formal nights one sees lots of James Bond wanna be's.

I spent my last 2 years of work in Megacorp on a manufacturing site where ties were never seen even by the CEO or Chairman when they paid a visit. One time when the chairman was visiting he was actually wearing a tie but after a while he said that he was only doing so because Fortune Magazine had voted him the worst dressed Executive in the country. Eventually he took it off and asked if someone wanted a tie.

That is so very very funny!!?

Indeed, quite, quite.
Also end every sentence with a question, like Isn't it?

(I just read a book from Scotland, and. although written in English, I had to sound out the dialog to recognize the meaning (My family is all from Glasgow)).

I have a set of five books from Scotland based on a radio play. The McFlannels.

My spouse cannot understand the books, does not understand the down to earth humour and does not comprehend many of the words/expressions.

I grew up in Canada those accents and most of the words/expressions but still had to enquire about a few that passed over my head. It makes me feel somewhat nostalgic when I pick one up and read a chapter.

Just booked a South American cruise from Buenos Aires. Plan to go down early and get some beach time in Uruguay or Argentina plus time in BA. Plan to spend time in Chile, then go to Boquette, Panama for some time. After that, more beach time in Costa Rica prior to flying home.

Not what we expected but the cruise price was right and the airline reward travel stars appear to be lining up. That is the winter taken care of.

There are a lot of museums very close to the Parliament buildings
https://www.bing.com/search?q=museums++ottawa+canada ,

Plus one across the river in Quebec called the museum of civilization which you can see from the parliament buildings. A long walk or short taxi ride.

Also by the National Gallery (art museum) is the Mint where they make coins, you can of course buy them there too for collecting.

The former Canadian Museum of Civilization was renamed the Canadian Museum of History a few years ago. Definitely worth a visit.

I'm off to Barcelona shortly and returning to Tampa via the Atlantic.

Booked a hotel near the city center and plan on doing some walking tours (don't plan on getting a car), and getting around by metro and taxi. I only started looking at what to do yesterday and came across free, guided walking tours, where you're just supposed to tip the guide, I guess. Strange business model. I guess the "catch" is that the guides aren't certified. I thought maybe they'd take you to places, get you to spend money, and take kickbacks. Anyway, I may or may not go on any of those. We have 5 days before boarding the ship.

A couple of certified guides we used in Barcelona really complained about the uncertified guides following them and listening in on their presentations.

We really enjoyed the All Things Dali tour from Spanish Trails - this goes to locations outside Barcelona. The Scottish guide Andrew was fantastic. It was a long, adventurous day. This is not an inexpensive tour company. We did another tour with them - an insider tour - which I didn't enjoy nearly as much even though it was a good overview of the city.

Another thing we totally enjoyed was the Barcelona Cooking School. We took the Saturday night classic tapas class, and the chef Juan was fantastic. Their setup is great for up to 8 people and very organized. They offer other classes too.

Barcelona is a bit nuts in that the demand for major sights is so high, they schedule very tight windows for visits and you have to arrive on time or lose your place. You usually have to schedule a few days in advance to get a time slot you want.

To see the inside of Sagrada Familia we ended up going with a local company company that did small English tours - Sagrada Familia Walking Tour It was too confusing dealing with the direct website and finding OK time slots. The local travel agency guided tour was very good.

You can see a lot in Barcelona. This site actually helped me get the best price for various visits. Just one of the pages - but links to the suggestion we used above. https://www.barcelonahacks.com/sagrada-familia-tickets-and-information/

We also did the day trip to Montserrat which was great. Barcelona Turisme sells all inclusive tickets to this (metro, train, cable car or funicular, access to various things on the mountain).

Go by Vinitus for fantastic seafood Tapas - not far up Passeig Gracia from Placa Catalunya and then east one block (I think). I wish we had eaten there two more times (we went twice). Between 2:30 and 6 may be best for getting a table. We hit them about 2:30pm to 3 and they seemed to be not quite as crowded - the lunch crowd finally thinning out. Really excellent fresh seafood.

We visited the Boqueria market first thing in the morning (which means 8am) and had breakfast there and wandered through all the stalls as people were setting them up for the day. That was cool.

Are you taking a cruise each way ?

Are you taking a cruise each way ?
They only go one way each season....spring away, fall back.

But this is the second half of a "connected" set of cruises.

After cruising from the Caribbean to Spain in the spring, I got an airline ticket that originated in Barcelona, and I booked the return air in the fall (the ticket I'm about to use).

I never would have even thought of doing this, but the price for a round trip was half the price of a one-way. I was originally going to throw away the other half of the ticket, but then started thinking, why not book a fall return cruise?

Back from my trip to Hawaii (Big Island). Stayed on budget and had a great time! Most food was expensive at the regular grocery store, but we scored a lot of cheap produce at the farmers markets. Costco and Walmart were the lifesavers on grocery shopping....

Most of the fun things we did were cheap or free. The exception being that we went on one Sunset Dinner tour (steak dinner and open bar included) and DS went snorkeling once - we had the $$ for those because we skipped the helicopter tour we originally had planned anyway. We opted instead to hike out and view the lava flow for free!

Eating out was pretty nil as we cooked or had picnics most of the time. We did try out a local burger place that had local grass-fed beef and had L&L BBQ once. Both of those were not expensive places.

I even made $50 (amex prepaid card) and 3000 hotel reward points by going to a timeshare presentation -saying "no" at the end of course. Kind of entertaining in a way to go to those things as I know about buying timeshares cheap on redweek or even ebay - but in every group there is as least one sucker that thinks they are a great deal at full retail. Hence why the resorts keep offering incentives to go to the sales presentations....

Anyway, we found some nice beaches and got to see Volcano Park as planned. We fit in a lot of sightseeing by car and walking. Another fun thing was the stargazing program at Mauna Kea visitor center, which was also free except for the gas to drive there....

Now it is time to gear up for winter and ski season here! I booked all my stays at my own condo thru January on my "weekends" of M,T,W and will get Feb done soon on the reservation system. I noticed that I already have renters for every weekend from Dec 9 and on this year. Thanksgiving week is the only thing that I would like to fill, because I can't go up that week anyway. Christmas the entire week is also already booked so no problem there.....

Thinking about a UK trip in the spring or fall. The falling GBP is making it even more attractive and more affordable. If not an extended visit then at least a stopover.

I wonder if the gain from the GBP drop will be partially grabbed by the hotels. Will tourist crowds make the savings worthwhile?

Right now the Euro is back towards it's low too.

I've sworn off any more international travel for awhile. Three trips of a lifetime in 2 years to Europe are enough.

But the wife's hobby is trolling the internet for bargains. Today's bargain is Delta airline flight to Dublin in May, rental car for 6 nights and 7 nights' hotels (with breakfast) in Irish hotels--$1179 each.

That's not too bad. You could also fly to virtually any city in Europe on Ryanair really cheap--and spend another week.

That's a good deal, and May is a lovely time to visit Ireland.

I very much doubt it. When I've booked hotels in the UK this year I have not seen any changes.

We have been living in the UK since May and are buying a house here. Since all of our income comes from the USA we have seen a 33% increase over what we used to get ($1.20/£ instead of $1.60/£). It dropped below $1.30 around March and I thought we were doing great (never expected the Brexit vote to be for "leave") so moved over a bunch for our planned 6 month stay. Since then we have decided to buy a house and had an offer accepted so I've transferred about $200k at ~$1.20.

I have just cashed another $90k of bonds that will be in my US bank account tomorrow and if the current rate stays below $1.20 I'll move that over as well. (today I can get $1.18)

Yes, we were in London last week and I was amazed to get $1.20 to the pound. Bought more than needed so I'd have starter cash for the next trip.

Incidentally, funny story.
DW wanted to go to High Tea at Fortnum & Mason, something I would equate with two hours in a torture chamber. But we went and I was amused to find that F&M are quite able to deal with the "husband problem." They had a nice IPA on the menu that eased my discomfort nicely. The scones were fantastic, too!

...
I did not say it but was thinking of the summer of 2017. I would imagine there would be a lag affect as advertising and tourists' plans take time to develop. Just a theory.

We were thinking about starting a trip next year in Amsterdam. Could perhaps add a bit of the UK to that. We would probably go in September to get decent weather and hopefully avoid peak summer crowds.
