There is a guidebook everyone uses that has that kind of info. I don't want to risk getting it wrong so I'll let someone else give the name. I pick up a lot of hitch hikers at Reid's Gap looking for a ride down there. First couple times I asked how they knew about it, they said "It's in the book!"
btw, the guy who founded Devil's Backbone was a home builder and built my house. He built the brewery too. His son has taken over the home building business.

I watched yesterday's youtube, that was great! On my home turf! I don't really backpack, but I do a lot of trail runs in the area. One of our hard core trail runs is in that section. We start at the highway 56 crossing, by that suspension bridge. Go up the AT north, and at the 2nd Mau-Har trail crossing (2nd shelter) we take that back to 56, for about 13 miles. Then we reload our running packs at the car, and go up and down the Priest, another 8 miles or more depending on how far over the top we go. I figure if I can do that I can take on about any race. I haven't done that in a few years.

What a wonderful series of vlog entries on the AT! It's been a dream of mine, but I'm sure I'll never do it.
Your days 60-62 are in my neighborhood. Dragon's Tooth, McAfee's Knob, Tinker Cliffs, Hay Rock (not sure that's noted in your guide books, but it's between Tinker Cliffs and Daleville - in winter it looks like a haystack on the crest of Tinker Mountain from the valley below) are all within easy reach of my house and I plan to do some of them this summer.

I learned about Devil's Backbone Brewery by watching YouTube videos of other hikers. If you are researching section hikes, you might want to check out the All Trails app. It gives you a lot of information about hiking trails and it's free. For the AT, I use an app called Guthooks. It's about $70 for the entire AT but it's almost a necessity for a thru hike.

Oh yeah, Guthooks. I know hikers who swore by that. You can buy it by the section if you aren't planning to do the whole thing.

Was that a plan or a mistake? Did you leave extra early to avoid early crowds or hot temps later on he trek?

I don't want to speak for OP, but I had a friend in college that nearly froze to death climbing Katahdin in late Sept/early Oct.
I suspect he was willing to risk some un-comfort on the front end (knowing it will get better) rather than get to Maine too late.
To OP, I will definitely check out your Youtube page. Good luck! Wish I was close enough to provide some physical support.
Edit to add: Cross posted with OP. Sounds like the crowds were the reason. Still think it wise to get to Maine before the cold sets in.

For those that asked about trail references, The AT Guide by David Miller ,$16, is the trail reference guide I used. It appeared to be popular with other hikers. FWIW, it is not a how to guide. It is detailed information about the trail, elevations, distances between shelters, distance to water and information on towns and resources along the trail. While the book is great for planning a trip, most hikers only take the pages they will need for each section (as always, weight matters). If you are thinking about hiking all or part of the trail, I highly recommend it as a great planning and hiking reference.

Cool, say hi to my buddies Jamey, Andy, and Colin. They are on the trail now as well.

Good luck Papa John! Wife and I have hiked several sections in GA, NC, VA. We hiked Shenandoah NP and saw lotsa bears. Hiking one evening (not recommended) I saw a small black dog walking towards me...it was not a dog but a black bear cub! We loudly clapped our hands and stopped walking. It ran a few yards away and jumped in a tree. We knew mama bear was nearby and slowly walked away as we continued to clap and make noise. Eventually the cub jumped down from the tree and the tall grass moved below as the mama bear was underneath the tree hidden from us. They both ran off together. That’s the last time I hiked in the evening. I look forward to seeing you on YouTube.

Summer 1979, during college break I worked on a crew doing a baseline survey of the Appalachian Trail, funded by a federal gov't plan to preserve the trail corridor.
We worked a long section maintained by the Dartmouth Outing Club. The club had permission to re-route the trail, and took full advantage. For most of the job we followed red flagging tape they hung, re-routing the trail through the woods. I cut line for the transit operator, spending my day swinging a machete and small axe. A great job for much of that summer -we'd go for the week and camp to save time walking in/out each day.
Always planned to hike "my" trail over Smarts Mtn, but haven't yet! When anyone talks about the Appalachian Trail, enjoy telling this story. Always start by saying I "made the trail" to get their attention.(technically correct!)

Good luck with your hike Papa John. I am an avid hiker but have trouble getting away from w&%k for long enough to do long sections. Done about 200 miles in week long sections north from Springer so far. So I plan to retire next January and start a thru hike from Springer mid to late March. I'll be 56 then and want to do this while I physically can do it and enjoy it.

Thru Hiked the AT in 2017. Miss the trail everyday. Take your time and enjoy, as they say "Last one to Katahdin wins."

Just watched day 75. Pretty cool. I love hiking a trail near me in MS that has similar terrain..... only w/o the big rocks. The beauty of it I can knock it out in 2 hours. I would die trying to keep up with ikubak.
