Let me know when they put the first St Regis in Havana.

My take: Cuba is just like the rest of the Caribbean, just has some exotic layer for Americans because we haven't been allowed to visit. There's good, bad, indifferent stuff, just like every other place in the region. Nothing particularly special about Cuba's economic misery, except that the US has lots of footprints on it.
Nobody else is barred from visiting, spending money, whatnot.
Not that I wouldn't like to go, but there isn't some specific magic to Cuba that exists there and only there.

From what I understand , they have a few parks that are unique in that that've not been overly affected by tourism.

I didn't mean to say I am not dying to go, and would happily pitch my tent in their parks (no swanky hotels for this one) but I guess from talking to travelers from other countries it is just another Caribbean destination to them, albeit one with a more interesting history.

There is just something about the U.S./Cuba story that makes it seem so much different, and I admit that I love visiting places where there are very few to no American tourists. But let's face it, just because there were no Americans crowding around Lake Issikul in Kyrgyzstan, doesn't mean that it is more beautiful than, say, Cancun!
