Dancing in Downtown Memphis?

We'll be going to Memphis (first time) next March. There seem to be a lot of dance clubs on/near Beale, but mostly it's the young crowd and modern dance music (ugh). W'ere looking more for the older music (blues/soul) of which there's plenty, but any suggestions for the clubs that have at least some sort of dance floor as opposed to just listening?

The two that look most promising are B.B. King's Blues Club and the Jerry Lee Lewis Honky Tonk.

One vote for BB Kink's club, although IIRC the dance floor was smallish. Music was great there.
Unfortunately, Beale Street is not that relatively large overall.

Unless things have changed in the last few years, there’s something for everyone on Beale St. While some clubs are mostly younger folks, they weren’t all like that.

I will also add that once it gets to be a certain hour, things get pretty rowdy down there. Last time we were there, the police had metal detectors set up about 8PM for anyone going into the entertainment district. We had a great time during the day, though.

There are a bunch of oood restaurants on Beale Street, but I never considered downtown Memphis a big dance scene. The FedEx Forum basketball arena is attached to the entertainment district, and it's quite busy when the NBA is playing or when the University of Memphis B ball is going on.

As someone that lived in Memphis 18 years (but left in 1986), I can tell you to be very careful after dark on Beale Street. The surrounding area is very dangerous--simply put. When we go for basketball, our family has reserved parking spaces in the Forum.

I'll never forget the last time I was headed out down to Beale. A very attractive young lady asked if I would be kind enough to escort her downtown. I thought it was sweet, and decided to help. Just before we made it to the crowds, she informed me she was a divorce lawyer, told me never to get married and then she proceeded to invite me to the bar she was meeting her friends at for her "girls weekend".

I sort of clutched my wedding ring, gave it a spin with my other hand and respectfully declined.

Even here in Seattle people are always getting stabbed at dance clubs. Most cities have interest groups, which may be formed around a teacher or a dance school. These are generally safe, if not exactly authentic. And the dancing is usually a long way from old blues dancing.

White people often seem to have some peculiar ideas about couples dancing. But we can't help it I am told. I once danced a lot. Even helped me achieve my divorce
