I rarely check luggage anymore. Still, when I check a bag, I just assume I will never see it again. Based on that, I never pack anything in checked luggage I can not replace within 12 hours at my destination. The exception might be packing a fitted, rented tux for a wedding. Still, you could stuff a tux in carry-on and then hang it out in your arrival-bathroom and "steam" it while showering.

We've had our luggage lost a few times, though it typically arrived within 1 to 2 days. Once, making a report at the airport lost-luggage office, we waited for a young man as he explained to the agent the extreme value of his bag, the expensive clothes inside, the irreplaceable items inside and on and on. The agent was pleasant and nodded his head a lot as he filled out the standard form. We entered next and explained that our old, ratty bags contained dirty clothes and cheap souvenirs. The agent cracked up. Made our day (and maybe his.)

We just got back from a two week trip overseas, for which we checked two bags. Nothing lost, but I noticed the people who whisked through the Global Entry kiosks, saving themselves five whole minutes over us commoners (yes, I timed the guy who was sitting next to us on the plane when I noticed him using the GE lane), were still waiting for their checked luggage after ours was belched up by the carousel. So another reason not to check luggage--retrieving it will eat up any time savings for those who have the GE credentials.
