I want to retire where I am but I wouldn't mind spending six months in Spain. But I would like to learn Spanish first.

Heard auction results on McAffee's sale of home and goods in Rodeo NM last night - The house went for $550k and the auction in total including art, antique cars and Airstream trailers - everything - brought in a million five. Quoth John: The seller got a very good buy - I had a million in the landscaping alone. I was very impressed with his composure and attitude - reminded me of Kipling's "If". Only problem is location - Rodeo is about 170 miles from anywhere (anywhere defined as Tucson AZ). Somebody got a killer house though....

After living 6 months in Angoulême, FR I'm ready for more of the same:

Alsace (though a bit cold)
Rousillon- easy access to Spanish Catalunya

I was in Paris for awhile last year and nobody was rude to me. I almost feel ripped off, I was bracing for the legendary rudeness.

Of all the standard touristy things we did I must say the death related items were coolest: catacombs in central Paris and that cemetery where Jim Morrison, Chopin, Oscar Wilde, etc. are planted.

Without a doubt, Amsterdam. Lots to do and I mean lots, most speak English, close enough to other countries to visit cheaply as lots of transportation choices there, people are friendly in Amsterdam, lots to do, lots to do, lots to do. That would be my #1 place to go of all the places I visited ever.

I was in Paris for awhile last year and nobody was rude to me. I almost feel ripped off, I was bracing for the legendary rudeness.

My DW/me have traveled in France many times (I worked there, for a time). I'm not saying the French can't be rude; that's a trait that’s shared among many nationalities and many countries, depending on the situation.

All I'll offer is that the French generally do not act as a typical American would act upon first meeting. We found them to be generally reserved, but once you know them as business associates (and later friends) they are "good folk".

Let's just say that while we're not "elderly" (speaking about my DW, of course ), there have been many times a person on public transport in France stood and offered my DW their seat (don't see that much in the US).

You may not agree with my assessment, but traveling the world my DW/me have found that if you treat people with respect (and especially for the French, to say a few words in their language, even if you "kill" it ), they will do all they can to help you out in your travel...

Love the Pacific Northwest - never can get enough. We could easily spend 6 months there. Wait - we already did that last year! March - August 2008

Too many choices -top 5

1) Italian Riveria - on the coast. Great pace of life, beautiful. Could learn enough Italian to get by.

2) New Zealand (either island) - Just one of the most beautiful places we've been, and the people are really great. I'd live there for the rest of my life, but it's just too far from family.

3) Hawaii - could only afford 6 months unless we went "native"

4) Costa Rica - haven't been there, but have some friends there. Sounds great, cost of living is good. Learn a little more Spanish while there....

5) Boulder, Colorado - While I don't like to shovel snow, I also want 4 seasons where we live. Maybe do summer and fall there.
