Late Autum to Early Spring in New Zealand

For those in the know, what is the weather like in the late Autumn to early Spring in New Zealand. I am talking about their seasons, not the ones on the Northern Hemisphere.

I realize that it is winter weather there, but as we know different parts of the country may have different weather in the same season. Is it winter or is it WINTER!!!!?

I was in New Zealand for 3 weeks in December, twenty years ago -- on both the north and south islands. The weather was not cold, for the most part. We wore lightweight jackets with long pants at times, and on other days t-shirts and shorts. I do remember going on a boat trip in Milford Sound and wearing a hat and gloves (and probably a sweatshirt beneath my jacket).

What we did have was TONS of rain on the south island. My Goretex jacket would get soaked-through on our hikes/walks. I also wore rain pants over my slacks on those days. I noticed a local sporting goods store there was selling TRIPLE Goretex jackets.

I think that was early summer in NZ.

Sorry, I've only been there during their summer or near summer. Never in their winter.

Just Google "climate" and a few locations. Auckland, Queenstown, Christchurh, Stewart Island. Ought to do it.
