Whoa, whoa, whoa...now we are talking SC bbq.

So the dad (Maurice's) is TOTALLY separate from the chains belonging to his two sons, one named Bessingers and the other named Melvins. The sons have spent a lifetime distancing themselves from their dad, a notorious weirdo who got his sauces yanked from area grocery stores when it was publicized that he had some questionable pamphlets in his Columbia area restaurants that were VERY offensive.

Melvin's and Bessingers are both delicious! Haven't eaten in a Maurice's in decades. And will definitely check out Lone Star--I tend to be heading for Manning when I go that way, and always hold out for the most beloved of my childhood faves there, D&H.

..maurice bessenger. Columbia is Maurice's piggy park. I prefer the brothers's place in Columbia. Both are 2nd rate bbq next to my favorite BBQ--North carolina...Chirpie's.

I'll admit to a great fondness for NC barbecue, because I grew up in a vinegar family. But frankly, good bbq is good bbq, regardless of saucing.

This fellow is getting a lot of good press and accolades, if you ever get down to Hemmingway:

He's relaunched and the 'cue is better than ever, according to local sources.

Hi Amethyst,
Great thread. We live in NJ and drive down to Hilton Head and Kiawah Island in SC. We usually strive to make it to Richmond VA before we stop for an overnight. We have adjusted our trip a few times and visited family in Georgia, and also added a side trip for a few nights in Charleston and Savannah. Love Charleston, Savannah is just ok. So if you are just going to stop over night and get back up early the next am and be on the road, most I-95 exit towns are pretty much the same. We stayed in 6-7 different ones and all were ok. Not much different, about $80 per night or so, then on our way!

Now as we are in early retirement, my spouse is still w*rking, were toying with the idea of driving too Florida for our May vacation. We have never driven that far but this may be the year!

Thank you for your Charleston compliments, ttv! Come visit anytime.

And per our commuter thread, however, please do not drive in Charleston during rush hour. Especially out to Kiawah (our neighbor island).
