How old are your kids? What do they like to do?
We go there skiing in the winter, never been in the summer, as we have mountains closer to home.

We went there about 15 years ago, son was about 6. Ghost Town in the Sky is a small but fun mountain top amusement park. They did a old west show, and had this roller coaster that probably would've seemed tame except that it went out over a huge drop so you just had the valley 2000 feet below. I remember staying at the Abbey Inn, which was very dated and basic but clean and cheap and just fine, and they had friendly cats roaming around and we enjoyed that too. Downtown Waynesboro was quaint and Mayberry-like and had a neat general store. We did some hikes to overlooks and waterfalls. Can't remember how close all this was to Maggie Valley, but yes, you can take kids. Teens might be more bored but if they are outdoorsy you can see more on longer hikes.
