Since there are so many incredible deals out there I thought we could post them. I'm going to a wedding in New York next month and the hotel prices are the lowest I've ever seen for New York . I snagged the Sheraton midtown west for $105 . Usually hotel rooms in NYC are in the $350 and up range .

Ok, in general, when you travel, if you use the website of the "chain" hotels, the best deals are government/state government rates. Even though I carry a government ID, they never ask, but in most cases the rates are way down for civil serpents.

Try it, the worst that can happen is they ask for ID, and you say you forgot it, but they never ask.

Oh, forgot, Sheraton Midtown West, great location, near the ship terminals, walking distance to subways all over, to Tiimes square, to theatre district, and great rate.

I see a lot of people mention wanting to go to Australia. If you can tolerate being confined for 14 hours at a time, Qantas are offering bargain fares to Australia. Think it is $299 each way plus taxes. This is the cheapest I have ever seen it in 25 years of flying.

DW told me about the above deal, plus an even better one. For $999, you can add 3 more legs to see 4 Aussie cities in one trip. Hurry, as the sale ends March 31. I may have to pass though.

On a recent stay in L.A., I got a better rate by calling the hotel and asking if they have a discount, they did have 10% off for AAA and AARP. They didn't ask for ID. The rate thru well-known web sites was a lot higher.

When we do road trips, we rarely book hotel rooms in advance. Instead, we figure out three or four towns where we *might* end up come evening, and print out hotel information for each of them. Then, when we're good and ready to stop, we call from the road. I always ask "Is this your best rate for tonight, given how late it is?" Sometimes they knock another $10 or $15 off the price, especially if it's 11 p.m. and they know few other people will come in that night.

Also, check out the Hosteling International hostels -- they're not just for backpacking kids any more, many have family rooms that you can sleep four to six in.

This is a great way to go to Oz, especially if you want to travel to multiple cities. I've been watching this rate for at least four months (and it hasn't changed). I wouldn't be too concerned about the rate going away soon (unless oil really spikes).

I know a few people who do this sort of thing and it often works well, especially now.

But personally I'd rather have a hot poker in my eyes than do this kind of bargaining. I hate haggling over price. Hate it, hate it, HATE it. Some people actually enjoy it. To each their own, but for now I'll just stick to overpaying a bit, I think.

Marriott hotels have often asked for mine. Fortunately, I'm still technically an employee (fee basis) and have an ID.

I recently bought my parents a pair of round trip air from NYC to Orange County CA for $127 per ticket. That's the lowest I've ever seen it.

Las Vegas is really cheap now. The cheapest I have seen it in many years.

We booked a flight from western Canada to Puerto Rico (Jan 2010) about a month ago for $567 each. Thinking the flu might be affecting prices I searched today, lowest fare was $960.

I think we might have to wait a few weeks for the flue effect to roll over onto air fares.

I'm going to Vegas next weekend and managed to get a room at the LV Hilton for $65 per night - that includes 2 free breakfasts plus 2 free cocktails - and amazingly this is over a Friday/Saturday. The flight was still a ridiculous price though.

We are going to Vegas next weekend as well. Flights for 2 plus 1 hotel room for 4 nights = $570 incl all taxes and fees from east coast w/ non-stop flights. Hotel is slightly below average quality but on the strip in the very middle near Flamingo rd. Waaay more expensive than our last vegas trip in January though (flights were $125 each then). Very cheap if you keep your eyes open.

I am going to Vegas in early May with a couple of my buddies from the mainland.
My total cost for 4 days, 3 nights at Vegas is $95. $5 for the flight (frequent flyer) and $30 a night at the Rio.

Interestingly enough after working with my casino host, scouring the internet, and responding to Harrah's promotional mailer, the cheapest room rate was found by simply picking up the phone a calling the Harrah group.

I found it surprising that despite conditioning people to use the internet to find the cheapest prices, that phone contacts can result in better prices.
