Interesting. You may be right. I went to Japan, but I had the phone's cellular roaming turned off (I might have even had cellular data turned off too, but I cannot remember. I know for sure I never connected to Wifi) - Anyway, Japan doesn't show up on my travel history.

Not sure if it's simcard dependent. I used a different local sim in the US (T-mobile), Thailand (dtac), Japan (U-mobile), Hong Kong (PCCW), Vietnam (mobifone), and Europe (Europasim/Vodafone Italy) and I registered dots in all these locations. Interestingly in Cambodia (Smart sim), I didn't register a dot.

In South Korea, I used a mifi instead of a simcard from SKT and I registered a few dots.

In Frankfurt and Taipei, I didn't have a local sim, had roaming turned off from my home carrier, and just used the airport wifi and still registered dots at the airports.

Presumably even wifi should work.

If I do a Google search, it goes to the Google site for the country and I start seeing ads in the local language, some of it probably Google ads.

Yet I had Location services turned on in my Google account and it doesn't show any dots for me, not even in the US.

mine had a LOT of data when I checked it a few months ago. I decided I didn't really want that info sitting around in the bowels of the NSA server farm in Utah, so I turned off *EVERYTHING* Google. I unplugged all rights to track anything and everything. I deleted everything already there. I log in for occasional use on maps or something else, but always log back off. My Google info is down to bare minimum. I block all cookies.

It's really not about whether or not the government could 'find' me if they wanted to. They still can. It's more about keeping my footprint smaller. If (when) hackers break into Google or Facebook or Twitter, they won't find much useful information on me. Also, no more ad profiles being built and sold off of my internet surfing. Really, I'm saving them heartache. We are LBYM minimalists on the cusp of retirement. We're not a target market for anything.

Mine says things like, Saturday night at X Restaurant, Sunday afternoon at Y Park, etc. It shows all my movements around my town for places that I stopped. For things that are not tagged in Google (like an ordinary residence that is not a business), it just has a red dot there at the exact location.

My locator history only shows where I might have used Google maps for directions or GPS. The places where I am familiar with, are not recorded. I always leave my location off unless I need it for that purpose.
