What does Google say about your travels?

https://www.google.com/locationhistory

I didn't check real hard on how far back this goes, but I don't think it goes back to August 2015 since there are no dots in France.

I couldn't bring myself to press the "enable location history" button.

Fascinating.

It has my travel/location history back through 2013, which I guess is when I must have allowed Google to use location services and save the history. It must only save overnight stays because on cruises, such as 2 weeks around New Zealand in 2014, I connect to local wifi when on shore visits but those are not recorded.

It has no location history at all for me in 2012.

Not seeing much at all. I turned this off at some point in time.

Same here. But, since I like posting on FB from interesting places, I do change the Privacy setting on my phone to detect my location, then turn it off again after I post. I'm sure Google has a full record of those places.

It says you only like the U.S. around the edges.

Me neither.

With all this technology, you would think more criminals could be taken off the streets. After all, most gang members carry fancy phones. That doesn't seem to happen.

Ditto. I was able to correlate it to my travels back to 2013.
I don't think it's just overnight stays because we were only transiting through Frankfurt and it picked that up as well as ports of calls for a cruise were on. However, we were using a local sim card.

I see plenty of places for me where I did not stay overnight. It also missed an area I spent 2 nights in recently, picking up when I moved on.

The dot out in the Atlantic is just a daytime shore visit.

I'm usually pretty stingy with information that I don't think "they" need to know, but I must have enabled location history at some point after the river cruise. Both the European burner and my normal phone were associated with my regular Google account*, but no history recorded.

* I have about 6 accounts, just to keep 'em guessing

Doesn't have anything for me.

I'm using Google Maps app,, while logged into my Google account, all the time.

Then used devices to do Google searches, etc.

I also have it turned off, but I do think that it would be fun to temporarily turn it on during a vacation or long trip just to create a record. Then back off once I return home.

Well I must have turned off the Location settings for my Google account.

But I geotag all my photos so I got pins showing on the map for Aperture or Lightroom.

Before I retired, the map on me would have been crazy looking. I live in NW Alabama, but my job territory was in Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina and Louisiana. I also would travel helping others to South California, Seattle, Reno/Sacramento/Modesto, Connnecticut/Massachusetts/Pennsylvania and East Texas.

I drove so many miles that I didn't have time to really do my job. I should have been a truck driver as I felt like one--mileage wise.

Mine is blank, just the way I like it.
I may be a little paranoid but but none of my devices have location services enabled. I used to turn off my company phone when I left work and not turn it back on until I went back to work the next day.

I think TV and movies show people being tracked by satellite because of their phones.

Very expensive to do and only big govts. can pull that off.

If the US wanted to track your movements, they could just hire spies to tail you.

Very unlikely.

What you have to be wary about is taking pictures at home with your phone and posting those online. People could locate where the pictures were taken unless you have location services off for the camera app. or you strip the pictures after the fact.

I like the geotag so my iPhone pictures are tagged but when I need to email or post them, I can strip the GPS from the EXIF. Tedious to do but not too bad.

DW just tried that link and the interesting thing is that it seems to be SIM dependent. She has had an iPhone, like myself, since January 2014 and when we arrived in the UK in May she immediately bought a UK SIM for it. Her history only shows locations from May this year, nothing earlier. It will be interesting to see what happens when we go back to the US in November and she puts her US SIM card back in.
