An interesting tangent: during the recent episode of John Adams, John was reading a newspaper article or letter to the editor, not sure which. The writer called him several bad names, said he was a cripple, and had bad teeth.

To which John replied, "I am not a cripple."

These so-called historians need to spend a few months/years studying presidential papers and such to form a "real" opinion. Sounds like political BS to me.

I like Harry - I believe he still holds the record for low approval percent.

But then I was born a Democrat - probably die one. and then there is my Sister - I don't know what she will do after deserting the Pats in the stretch - now that Bret has retired - probably go back to the Pats(who I've heard have a good football team) and still vote Republican.

Sooo - here's to Yellow Dogs and Democrats - if you have a good idea, convince a Democrat and I'll vote for the Democrat. The other folks are just well the other folks.

Mr. Gore is busy shining and polishing his Nobel Peace Prize, and attending to the Global Warming issues.

As for the Great Uniter, Mr. Bush I believe his term is up on or about Jan 2009. But if we need another Bush there is always Jeb who is waiting in the bullpen and ready to come to pitch relief.

You forgot to ask about Mr. Carter who is off to the Middle East on a mission to find PEACE. Once Mr. Carter returns I am sure he too will shine and polish his Nobel Peace Prize.

It is silly for historians to evaluate current events. They of all people should know that the real impact of decisive actions -- whether widely perceived as positive or negative at the time -- can take decades to fully evaluate as ripple effects from previous actions run through world events.

I suspect good historians know this, so the ones that are left are the political hacks who are more interested in grinding a political axe than providing a dispassionate and measured evaluation of a presidency.

A new poll suggests that President Bush is the most unpopular president in modern American history.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Thursday indicates that 71 percent of the American public disapprove of how Bush is handling his job as president.

"No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating in any CNN or Gallup Poll; in fact, this is the first time that any president's disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark," said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director.

"Bush's approval rating, which stands at 28 percent in our new poll, remains better than the all-time lows set by Harry Truman and Richard Nixon [22 percent and 24 percent, respectively], but even those two presidents never got a disapproval rating in the 70s," Holland said. "The previous all-time record in CNN or Gallup polling was set by Truman, 67 percent disapproval in January 1952."

CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider adds, "He is more unpopular than Richard Nixon was just before he resigned from the presidency in August 1974.

Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan writes in a new memoir that the Iraq war was sold to the American people with a sophisticated "political propaganda campaign" led by President Bush and aimed at "manipulating sources of public opinion" and "downplaying the major reason for going to war."

McClellan includes the charges in a 341-page book, "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception," that delivers a harsh look at the White House and the man he served for close to a decade. He describes Bush as demonstrating a "lack of inquisitiveness," says the White House operated in "permanent campaign" mode, and admits to having been deceived by some in the president's inner circle about the leak of a CIA operative's name.

The book, coming from a man who was a tight-lipped defender of administration aides and policy, is certain to give fuel to critics of the administration, and McClellan has harsh words for many of his past colleagues. He accuses former White House adviser Karl Rove of misleading him about his role in the CIA case. He describes Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as being deft at deflecting blame, and he calls Vice President Cheney "the magic man" who steered policy behind the scenes while leaving no fingerprints.

McClellan, once a staunch defender of the war from the podium, comes to a stark conclusion, writing, "What I do know is that war should only be waged when necessary, and the Iraq war was not necessary."

Will the invasion of Iraq, the mishandling of the Iraq War & the Afganistan War, the Hurricane Katrina fisaco, the NO child left behind fisaco, the mission accomplish photo-op, and the outing of a CIA officer be lasting im·ag·es of how the American public remembers and how history remembers Mr. Bush's presidency?

Or will history remember Mr. Bush as a strong leader who promoted the cause of freedom?
