Do women get off far too easy in the legal system? Poll
First off if this belongs in the soap box move it there.
And read the whole thing before you judge it. I have a neighbor that is a total nuisance. She has caused trouble for nearly everyone around her over the last 20 years. So much so that no one even speaks to her. We are able to see the property assessments online where I live and also if people have paid their taxes or not. She has not paid her property taxes for AT LEAST 4 years and her house has been up for sheriffs sale twice. On top of that she does not pay people who work for her. My other elderly neighbors get phone calls from car dealerships and veterinarians and all sorts of people that she has not paid. We had a plumber come o our house and as soon as he walked into the door said that my neighbor owes him over $1000. Now on top of this she got convicted of identity theft like 4 years ago and nothing was done. Well now she has been indicted by a grand jury on much more serious identity theft charges...it made all the papers. But by the way it looks now she is taking care of her property like she has no plans of going anywhere...and maybe she already knows she will get off with nothing as a result of this as well! Growing up I had two girls around my age kill people and both got off with nothing. I have a lady that I know pretty well that has a bunch of DUI's and I don't think she ever even lost her license. And of course women who falsely accuse and are violent towards men or commit sexual offenses seem to ALWAYS walk free. If you are going to make laws they should apply to everyone not one race or gender. This just hurts everyone. We are all humans and that is how we all should be treated. I checked the prison statistics and it's something like 6.8% of people in prison are female! Now I believe men commit more crimes than women but 94-6! I think more like 60-40! In the media it seems pretty one sided also. Maybe they think that they will look like the bad guy to say what is right. We had a local case where a lady took an 18 year old pregnant girl and while she was still alive cut a baby out of her and left her dead in her apartment...she planned this for like months! She had a prior conviction of stabbing another woman and stealing her baby. Now the part that shocked me even more was there was like a sympathetic tone to the reports about this!! Keep in mind if a guy would kiss a 15 year old girl he would probably have his house burned down and be treated worse than bin laden in the media. I think that actually men are more to blame. I'll tell you why. My neighbors for instance the female ones HATE this lady (the identity thief) more than the guys. I talked to two the other day and these women just despise her. I think guys feel like they would lose political power or be ridiculed to actually be fair. I'm not talking about women who hate men but actual decent women that I interact with seem to think that women who commit crimes should be held to the same standard. And the other women I associate with I think actually would give fair sentences to female criminals. Is it just me or do women get off far too easy? I know if I pulled any of the stuff my neighbor has I would be typing this in from jail. Jim |

Think about the difference in reaction between a female teacher having relations with a male student and if the roles were reversed. In the former case, they were "in love" and sometimes the teacher doesn't even go to prison. In the latter case, people would be forming a lynch mob.
When men and women consipre together in a crime, it seems like regardless of the circumstances he gets a much harsher sentence than she does. In several cases I've seen, she gets probation as he spends years in the clink. Yes, in my opinion there is no question that women are, in most cases, treated significantly more leniently than men. We're a society that has trouble believing that women can do evil things without being provoked into it, I think.

Yes, it's not EVEN CLOSE.........
![]() We had a local case several years ago where a woman was arrested for stabbing her lover. She was a first offender, and got ONE YEAR in jail with work release, 500 hours communtiy service, and 10 years probation......... The dead man had no prior record, and his family was aghast.......... In another case, a guy sold heroin to a girl, who overdosed and died, got 30 years in prison..........

Even when a man and woman get equal jail time, the local max security prisons vary dramatically btw men and women's facilities. Max security for men consists of indoor "pods" each comprised of 20-40 cells of double occupancy that open out to an indoor central communal area. Death row inmates mixed with gen-pop inmates in general. They just wear red jumpsuits instead of blue (or was it orange?). Outdoor rec time is limited, and for the most part takes place in what amounts to large chain link fence cages (chain link ceiling included).
Women's Prison is a much much different story. Gen pop is housed in bunk houses, each containing approx 40 women with bunk beds. Most of the day, the gen pop are free to walk about the landscaped grounds (reminiscent of my middle school campus - picnic tables, willow trees, overly trodden ground with grass wearing thin). Some of them manufacture license plates or answer the State's public information hotline. But mostly they hang out, smoke cigarettes and shoot the breeze. The one difference that I saw was that death row for women meant housing in a pod that looked very much like the pod for men - 20 or so single occupant cells with a common area. Apparently the women in deathrow aren't very sociable, so they all stay in their cells (almost said "rooms"!) virtually all the time. The shocking thing is that there are only a handful of women on death row (in the entire state) versus tons of guys in red jump suits at the men's prison (many dozens, perhaps hundreds?). Walking freely among the gen pop at women's prison - I didn't really feel at risk at all. If the gen pop at men's prison were allowed to roam freely, I couldn't say that I would want to walk among them. |

Are you saying that Ivan Boesky did the same thing as Martha?
Hillary Clinton...well that's another story. Her and her husband should have adjoining cells. |

This has nothing to do with misogyny. It's about equalism.
The point is not to hate women it's to love everyone the same men and women. If a HUMAN breaks the law they should be held to the same standard. Just because someone is female doesn't mean they should just get off with nothing. I don't think the difference between men and women is that big. I don't want any special sicko punishments for this lady or anything mean at all. It's just any guy that stole someones identities twice...this time at a federal level would go to jail...and so should she! And the lady drunk driver should face the same penalty as a guy...no more no less. You are no less dead if a female drunk driver hits you than a male one! The women on my street want this lady brought to justice more than the guys. And the people she is hurting are women...she is stealing their identities. She has already made two neighbors sell their houses just to get away from her. This stuff backfires big time when things are not fair. Some person or persons are going through a total mess and may have lost money that will never be recovered because she was let off a first time with nothing. And the way it looks now these new victims will still not send her to jail!! Also some of my women friends have complained to me that guys seem afraid to be in a room alone with them and seem afraid around them alone. Also one told me she was upset at the doctors because they now require a woman to be present and this took longer and was more embarrassing to her she felt. One lady says it has made dating more difficult because guys seem to be scared and this to normal women is very upsetting. But it's the result of too many false accusations with no penalty for doing so. And it hurts the good women out there. I think famous people are treated differently as well. Like Paris for example. I feel bad for her she should not have got a different sentence because of her fame..she should have got what any one else would have no more no less. The same goes for the DC madam. I thought it was just awful what happened to her. And prison conditions should be the same for men and women and both should not be abused or put into danger...but the SAME conditions. I think this thread took a different turn so I will go with it. I know this is almost socially unacceptable to say but I will say it. I think this whole sex offender thing is getting to the point of total hysteria. Look at Janet Jackson the world almost sees half of her chest and you would think that she detonated a dirty bomb in that stadium. I read the teacher article and here is what I think. First off I think she is one in 1000 that would get a sentence like that. Also growing up at age 14 I had a 17 year old girlfriend and around that age had some other much older women be a little too affectionate at times with me. One was like 75 years old. I do not have one drop of hate for any of them. If I had to make a punishment for them it would be to cut back on the booze! I feel sorry for this lady a sentence like that is just insane. I think this boy should do jail time for being so cruel. She is getting a sentence harsher than if she killed her husband or shot or stabbed someone. And if she does 15 years this boy feels comfortable letting her sit in jail until he is in his 30's!! But with that said if that is the sentence that they give a guy for doing the same thing then it's only right to give it to her. I can't stress that enough. If it was a guy teacher same goes for him it would be super cruel for a 15 year old girl to do the same. There is something like close to 7 billion people on this earth....obviously the urge to have sex is pretty strong. And I would say if anything guys and girls are on pretty equal footing when it comes to sex...or else or course the population would not be 7 billion! And I don't think having sex with a young boy or girl is a crime worse than murder and stabbing and so on.....lets put it in perspective. Also guy or girl you could actually sit there and put someone in prison for 15 years because they had sex with you twice!....and this was your "girlfriend"!! I guess it's still legal to be inhumanly cruel. Jim |

Women do get treated differently. Unfortunately, the price of men believing women are inferior and must be protected is that they also believe that women can't be held as accountable for their actions (we just lack a man's understanding of right and wrong).
Personally, I think if you make it unacceptable for anyone (including women) to be misogynist, you will get rid of a lot of the inequality in punishment as well. They go hand in hand. Unfortunately, we are no where near that and it doesn't look like we will be anytime soon. |
