Fed. judge had sexual images on Web site

Kozinski became the youngest federal appeals court judge in the nation when he was appointed at age 35 to the bench by former President Ronald Reagan in 1985. He is known as a strong defender of free speech and First Amendment rights.
Alex Kozinski, chief judge of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, said he thought the material on his Web site couldn't be seen by the public, the Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site. The images included a video of a "half-dressed man cavorting with a sexually aroused farm animal," the newspaper reported.

Just read a post by Lawrence Lessig that puts this in perspective. Apparently, the judge's son set up a family web server for the judge to host photos etc. The kid didn't know what he was doing and left some sub directories with read permissions allowing visitors to browse to them. A guy who has been POd at the judge for years dug around and found some porn on the site and shopped his findings around to the media. No child porn, just some mundane stuff -- as Lessig put it, kind of like having Playboy in a desk drawer. The media hyped it up including references to "bestiality." Lessig looked at the bestiality video. It didn't have any sex. It showed a guy taking a dump in a field - while he still has his pants down a donkey came running over and chased him out of it's field.

I've always liked Kozinski. Son of Holocaust survivors, he has always had a very interesting take on what it is to be an American. So, I'll say in his defense that the material has been reported to be pretty typical of some of the coarse and sexually related humor that appears in the average email inbox. I get a couple of dozen of them a day in my inbox from my friends.

May have sent a few of them myself even.

What's the deal here? Posters who've previously shown themselves to be consistently liberal are missing the opportunity to blast Kozinski based on his having been appointed by Reagan? Very confusing......
