What happened to the 18.4 cent gas tax repeal for the summer?

Have not heard much about it since the primaries in IND and NC.

In the short run the 18.4 cent gas tax repeal for the summer would put a few extra bucks in our pockets but in the long run without a national energy policy it would not mean much.

God Bless Us All

$4.139 is the current price for midrange gas. I believe that the increases have surpassed any tax 'holiday' we may be 'given' by the guvmint.

Too little too late for many.

Typical driver would save less than 30 bucks over the summer, if the entire savings was passed on to us. Most likely it would be eaten up by the stations themselves as they fatten up their razor thin profit margins.

There is no vision in America when it comes to energy. We don't drill enough we don't drive the right vehicles we have awful politicians that we re elect every 2 6 or 4 years.

There should be drilling in Alaska, off the entire east coast of the USA, off in The gulf in Florida, EVERYPLACE. But better we should grow corn to put in the SUV. Dumb ideas.

Very little brain power in Washington.

Ummm. And what happens when the oil from all that drilling runs out? Because it will, you know.

I'm having difficulty seeing how one could possibly equate additional drilling of a failed (non-sustainable) policy with long-term vision.

Vision would be pushing for global energy sustainability. So in regards to there being no structural vision of energy policy in the US, I would agree. That additional drilling is a positive vision for energy policy is, in my opinion, nothing but tripe.

"Vision" would, I think, be raising the gas tax substantially, thereby forcing OPEC to reduce prices to maintain demand. Then the price would be the same but the money would remain here.

Oh, and I should mention that this could reduce the need for additional exploration, reduce pollution/global warming, and promote alternative/renewable energy sources.

Unfortunately, vision doesn't seem to be a strength of our system.

CNN Money - Gas prices hit 5th straight record

The price for a gallon of gas sets a new record high at $3.718, according to AAA.

Retail gas prices strike 5th straight record - AAA - May. 12, 2008

5th Straight Record - not a good thing. $4 is right around the corner.

Here in my neck of the woods it is $3.72 a gallon.

Although I am currently living overseas, I had thoughts about returning to the US in my late 60's or early 70's and live in an RV, traveling around North America. Since this would be in about 8+ years but with these rapidly increasing prices, it looks like RVing may be a pipe dream.

There's no reason for something like this to be a pipe dream. I think it simply calls for a more judicious use of fuel.

Instead of traveling some place new every 2 days, find a way to create a basecamp and only move every two weeks or every month. Efficiently designing your travel movement so that you aren't criss-crossing territory would also minimize the fuel budget.

These tactics may remove some spontaneity from your travels, but they should still allow for some incredible sightseeing and maybe just a few adventures.

Being a lazy traveler, I don't move around too much. I have been in Chiang Mai for 1 1/2 years and still haven't been south of Bangkok. If I began RVing, I would want to cover a lot of territory. Even at a slow travel pace, it would burn a lot of costly fuel.

Of course, we are talking at least 8 years from now and my crystal ball is a bit murky right now so I am unable to see my real future.

ABC News: Old Gas Pumps Can't Rise Above $3.99

Things do not look good for the little guy or for the common folk trying to make an honest living.

It might be time to listen to the GREAT Willie Nelson and use HEMP as an alternate fuel.

That is funny Khan! You know, owning a SUV isn't funny. If you want one, for whatever reason, and you can afford it, the fuel and the upkeep, go for it! And the price of gasoline isn't funny. We've all known this would happen and that it would hurt.....and here it is......

But owning a SUV and complaining about how much it costs to fill it up, that is funny! Hey, if you can't afford expensive food, don't develop a taste for caviar!

Regarding our love for consuming energy and the price of gas........ The laws of economics say that higher prices will result in less consumption by us and more efforts by suppliers to provide more until equilibrium is reached. But the world is demanding more and more fuel, supplies are finite, prices are going to go up...and up...and up. Don't look for any sort of long term leveling. Don'tbe surprised when gas is $6 - $8 - $10. Plan ahead. Don't buy a low milage vehicle if you think filling it with $10 gas is beyond your reach.

Actually broke the $4.00/gal mark in our little 'burb' today. It was $4.05/gal for regular on my way home tonight. I don't like it, but if anyone is really surprised they must have been living in a cave for 10 years. Whether we like it or not, we get what we deserve...
