I agree with you Walt. Our 1999 F150 (V8/5-speed manual) gets 22mpg on the highway loaded to the brim with fishing "stuff" and our kayaks on top. My Civic (4 cyl/auto) gets about 38 on the highway. We're heading to northern Minn shortly and will drive about 1300 mi round trip. We'd save roughly $100 (based on gas = $4/gal) driving the Civic but would have to rent an outboard motor, trolling motor, etc., and wouldn't have our kayaks along to play with.

In town, of course, we use the Civic daily while the F150 sits undriven for weeks at a time. It's a 1999 with 38k miles.

We do pay attention to our economics though...... this trip replaces one to northern Ontario, Red Lake area. The additional 700 miles (round trip) of driving, high gas prices in Ontario and the exchange rate issue which caused the resort owner to jack up prices (he charges in USD) we estimated would cost $480 more than going to northern Minnesota. We're very familar with both areas, have a small preference for northern Ontario, but not a $480 preference. At least not this year. We'll reconsider again next year or maybe in the autumn.

In West Texas the price is $3.95 a gallon.

Temperature is about 81 degrees right now earlier it was 98+ - electricity bill will go through the roof.

Instead of suing OPEC - maybe Mr. Bush should extend an olive branch of peace to Mr. Hugo Chavez at least he would not have to kiss him on the cheek and hold hands with him. Oh, I nearly forgot he might save some American taxpayers $$$$ on jet fuel by going to South America instead of the Middle East.

High octane was $4.99/gallon at a station in Portola Valley today. (Portola Valley is an affluent town west of Stanford University.)

There are no other stations in this area so this particular station is always on the high end of the distribution.

I zipped by on my 20 mile/water bottle road bike without stopping

20 mile / water bottle is excellent. I only get 10-15 mpwb.

smart fortwo pure, passion, and passion cabriolet

The smart car might be a nice alternate that is worth pondering as the price of the gas goes up.

But it's MPG is about the same as that of our much roomier, five passenger, six-year-old Echo.

If your car will take regular, I would switch (if it won't, I would switch cars!).

$3.89 at most stations here, yesterday. But, $3.93 in St. Bernard Parish, southeast of New Orleans.

These prices are just nuts! I'm glad I don't use much gas.

But is there really a shortage? Supply and demand?? Something smells rotten in the fuel patch.

I didn't think that this was something that we were striving towards.

Yeah, that's what I find somewhat disgusting about the car companies...in the past we've had cars that had better gas mileage with more space. What happened since then? Was it that Americans crave more power and lower gas mileage or that the auto companies in their infinite wisdom decided that those cars wouldn't sell in the US anymore. Probably both. Hopefully all that will change in the next few years and car makers will start offering cars with an option of having a smaller engine than what comes in the standard model, so that people that don't care if they're car goes from 0 to 60 in 8 seconds can actually buy a car where the most important thing to them is gas mileage.
