Seeing that Caroline Kennedy is seriously being considered to replace H. Clinton in the senate I did a little research to see what background she had.
I can't find anything - she wasn't even a community organizer.

Caroline Kennedy
Caroline Kennedy Biography (Political Relative/Writer) — Infoplease.com

I'm thinking that in troubled times and there was a good president US; citizens would put his/her closest relative into office - just as the Roman's did after J. Caesar's death.

It would be funny if the USA did revert to some form of a monarchy.

Human beings really haven't advanced much in how they choose the leader of their tribe - tall, healthy, good looking, rich and from a successful family is about all you need.

I agree. I am almost at the point where I will not vote for or donate to a political candidate that comes from a major political family. There are getting to be too many of them. And it isn't just a Democratic thing, the Republican's also have dynastys.

I wonder why all the people who were terrified of Sarah Palin as VP, because of her thin resume aren't screaming about Caroline's complete lack of qualifications.

I guess a princess from Camelot is the only qualifications you need to be Senator as long as you are a Democrat.

Hey, it's NY. anything goes.
if she can learn to like real pizza, bagels and lox, pastrami on rye, and do a convincing high five without puking on the fishmongers at the Fulton Fish Market, she's in.

Well, for one thing, Caroline would not be a heartbeat away from the Presidency as Palin would have been.

What's a Senate position go for in NY? I've heard cost of living is higher there than Illinois.

it all depends on the outcome of the "no puking" thing in the Fulton Fish Market.
those guys will set up a betting pool to see if she can hold onto her cookies or not when they chop the head off a huge tuna right in front of her.
if she holds on, she gets half. that's the price tag.

Fear is a powerfull motivator in people. The politicians know that better than almost anyone else. If we (as the american people) are not very carefull, politicians can use that fear to pass almost any laws they choose. If you look at the arguments in the past for why certain people "needed" to become dictator, leader, Czar, etc, the argument usually goes something like this....

"But you see in extreme situations like this, we need to take decisive action. It is important that for the beneifit of society that a single person steer the ship to a better future for everyone.... blah..blah...blah..."

Yup.... been there... done that... bought the tee shirt... and was not much impressed either.

It is a little disconcerting to see the rise of political "royal families," though I guess it's not an entirely new thing.

One of the reasons I was uneasy at the prospect of a Hillary Clinton presidency was because of that. When we recite the order of the presidents, we'd end with:

"Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton." And that pretty much speaks to how much we collectively vote for the name and not the person or the qualifications.

Sooo - I take it a University of Oklahoma grad who likes Pace Picante Sauce will NOT be nominated anytime soon - by either party!

No modern day Andrew Jackson?

Maybe we haven't heard the last from Sarah. Can't call her Ivy League.

IMHO Caroline should run for office, not be appointed, if she's interested in this kind of public service. She would likely win easily and could then build up a political resume.

I seem to recall that Carolnie was married and had a last name of Schlossberg so I googled this up :
Quote:
Caroline Kennedy wants to go to DC not just to be a Senator, they say, but maybe also to escape her terrible marriage! Supposedly, Kennedy's been on the outs with her husband Ed Schlossberg for years, in one of those amicable quiet classy rich people sort of separations.
Politics: Caroline Kennedy May Want to Reconsider This Senate Thing

I realize that this is all soap opera stuff/tabloid stuff, but how can someone just drop their legal last name and not expect to be asked about it? Will she be Sen. Kennedy or Sen. Schlossberg?

Seeing as the last name would be the primary reason why she'd get elected, seems like an obvious call...

It probably won't 't be funny unless you're part of the ruling dynasty.

Unless Hillary gets her way, next up is George P. Bush!

Caroline Kennedy being floated as a possible replacement for Clinton in the Senate is hardly cause for monarchy talk, Dex.

If anything, the John Adams / John Quincy Adams and George HW Bush / George W. Bush duos are better candidates for due cause to start this thread.

Also, there is a document that stands in the way of a reversion to monarchy.

I'd argue that today "celebrity" more than "blood line" is the coin of the realm. Ronald Reagan, Jessy Venture, Fred Thompson, Sonny Bono, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Franken, Fred Grandy (Love Boat's "Gopher"), Ben Jones (Duke's of Hazzard's "Cooter"), and many others, all traded their name recognition for political office with no prior political experience. The Kennedy, Bush or Clinton name is not much different, and not necessarily better, than the Schwarzenegger name when it comes to winning a popularity contest.

The important difference between this system and a monarchy is anyone can become a celebrity, whereas you can't change your blood line. More importantly, we proved this year that a basic nobody can topple both a blue blood and a celebrity to gain the highest office in the land. The US rocks!
