I had an '01 VW TDI Bug, I bought it and drove cross-country at an average of about 75-80 mph. I think I only spent about $140 in gas to go 2,600 miles. I could get over 500 miles on a little over 14 gallons. I kept it for driving around town and still got about 40 mpg. I would highly recommend a TDI VW. Only it sucks because in California if you wanted one you'd have to buy a used one over 7,500 miles.

If I get a car again, I plan on getting a VW TDI again. You can convert it to biodiesel pretty easily, then you can make your own gas from used cooking oil.

You could literally power your car on bacon grease!

I also dislike govt subsidies. I would like to stop the government subsidies for SUVs 'small businesses' currently get.
Let the market work this out without interference.

I'm not going to buy a diesel anytime soon. I think Priuses are WAY overpriced, although I can afford one.

I might consider a Civic hybrid, they aren't as overpriced as the Prius.

However, my 4-cylinder Accord sedan with automatic regularly gets 28.5 on mixed driving, and 33-34mpg on the highway. No reason to get rid of it I can see...........

The base model 2008 Honda Accord (hybrid) is $22,600.
Base model 2008 Toyota Prius is $21,000.
Demand in your particular area may have increased the price of the Prius more than the Accord. However, armed with the knowledge of the MRSP, I would be surprised if it was that much more if any.

The Prius and the Civic are very comparable.

The Civic and Prius both seem small to me, I am almost 6'3" tall, and I feel cramped in them.

The reason I bought the 2003 Accord was the 2003 Acura TL I test-drove didn't have enough headroom. Lo and behold, in 2004, they decided to build the TL on the Accord platform, picking up 3 inches of headroom in the process...........

Excellent, always important to find a car that 'fits'
My only point was that the Prius is not anymore overpriced than the Civic as you stated.
I actually was amazed how roomy the Prius was when my wife test drove one. However I am only 6' tall so didn't have the same issue.

The dealers around me all mark up the Prius $3000 over sticker, and used ones with low miles are almost as much as a new one........

I do mostly highway commuting, so the hybrid doesn't make sense. Plus, the price premium doesn't make sense either.

I read a while ago that Honda would sell a diesel Accord. I'll buy one of those in a heatbeat. Safe, reliable, fuel efficient.

Is the effeciency of a diesel enough to offset the fairly significant price difference in the cost of the fuel?
