Next wave of homeless vets emerges
A USA Today article Next wave of homeless vets emerges, states that 1 in 4 of the homeless are Veterans.
Next wave of homeless vets emerges - USATODAY.com One has to wonder what the answer is to such a problem. After they put their lives on the line it is a sad commentary that they come back to the U>S and that some end up homeless, lose their families, lose their friends, and their jobs. GOD BLESS ![]()

Please, not the "homeless vet" BS again. Combat veterans are actually UNDER-represented in the homeless, when the stats are adjusted for age and gender.
We've been down this road before, and a whole generation of Vietnam vets was painted with the "homeless, drug abusing, alcoholic, psycho killer" brush. The truth was actually 180 degrees different, Vietnam vets were more well adjusted by most measures than the general population. Here's one refutation of the latest blather, though it doesn't do a complete job of citing the relevant statistics: ************************************************** ** HRI's claims are false on both the "veteran disparity" and the causes of homelessness. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development, for example, says only 18.7 percent of homeless are veterans (albeit based on incomplete data), and that's down from 23 percent in 1996. That still leaves vets seeming to be disproportionately homeless. But you have to account for two facts: the demographics of those in homeless shelters differ vastly from those not homeless, as do demographics of veterans and non-vets. Most important: Among adults in homeless shelters, males outnumber females by three to one, while females outnumber males in the general adult population. And 93 percent of all veterans are male. So HRI didn't really measure the disparate homeless rate of vets; at best it restated the obvious – that men are a lot more likely to be homeless than women.Michael Fumento: The Homeless 'Vets' Who Aren't ********************************************* Wags, if you are really interested in the truth, a quick search will rapidly reveal the "bogicity" of these "wave of homeless vet" claims. For one thing, in most of these surveys they simply ask the homeless guy/gal if they are a veteran, without confirming this. One study indicated that approx 80% of those who claimed to have served actually had not. Yes, there are guys/gals who are adversely affected physically and mentally by their service, and they need and deserve our help. But, overall, those who have served are statistically better adjusted than those who didn't serve. The negative stereotypes are largely a product of the poverty industry and they are repeated by those with a political ax to grind. If the shoe fits, wear it. ("Nice loafers". Get it? yuk, yuk)

Just because someone says that it isn't so - does not mean that there are not homeless veterans in the U.S.
Fox News (conservative)has an article America Has Failed Our Veterans, by Col. David Hunt who by most estimates is a supporter of OUR TROOPS and does not appear to have a hidden agenda or have a political ax to grind. FOXNews.com - America Has Failed Our Veterans - FOX Fan Ex·cerpts from Col Hunt's article Well, we have lost our way, we have failed them. We have let them all down. You cannot keep asking, hell demanding, that your soldiers go back to combat three, four and five times in five years — leave their families, lose their limbs, their lives, their souls and then not even have the decency to take care of them when they get hurt. We ought to be ashamed and embarrassed Here is the deal we have made: You soldier, go and get blown up, leave your family, suffer numbing emotional damage, have your body blown apart, and we, the United States of America, will take care of you for the rest of your life. The soldier always does his part and this nation always lets them down. We are now learning that the suicide rates of returning combat vets are four times higher than we thought. We also were treated to this fact that there are over 160,000 homeless veterans in this country. I do a lot of volunteer work at a homeless shelter and have worked to establish a veterans’ homeless shelters in Boston. I can say with a sadness that cuts very deep that we are now seeing returning veterans from this current war living on the streets of Boston and L.A. That ought to be enough to unseat a government End of ex·cerpts. GOD BLESS ![]()

From VA.gov on the homeless veterans
Overview of Homelessness - Homeless Veterans Excerpt from VA gov. About one-third of the adult homeless population have served their country in the Armed Services. Current population estimates suggest that about 195,000 veterans (male and female) are homeless on any given night and perhaps twice as many experience homelessness at some point during the course of a year. Many other veterans are considered near homeless or at risk because of their poverty, lack of support from family and friends, and dismal living conditions in cheap hotels or in overcrowded or substandard housing. It is clear that ladies like Zero do not like to listen to facts or news (just like in the case of torture) that do not go along with their way of thinking and it is clear that they do not like to lose agruments thus I guess that information that comes from the Veteran's administration itself will not make any difference. GOD BLESS ![]()

Fox News - Col Hunt's No Homes For Our Soldiers
FOXNews.com - No Homes For Our Soldiers - FOX Fan Ex·cerpts from Col Hunt's article Upfront, if this does not piss you off, finally get you off your butts, run outside naked while screaming mad, make you paint your face and do a protest dance in front of the White House, then my friends, you are dead from the neck up — and you need to forever stop saying you care for soldiers or, for that matter, your own freedoms. That there is homelessness in the United States of America is tragic; the fact that there are homeless veterans is criminal. Mostly men, who have fought our wars, spent countless days and nights in hell holes all over the world, been wounded, lost friends defending our way of life ... only to return to live under a bridge? This should not stand, but it does. This is not the current administration's fault; it is every administration's fault since Valley Forge. But we are at war now. We were attacked and we have soldiers being blown up and killed, so this administration should be solving this issue — and it is not. The veterans are homeless, not just because we have tough economic times this issue existed in the best of times. Those who go to war for us, those who lost their limbs for us, those who risk it all for us, should at least have a place to call home, not in some damn box on a heating grate in the middle of Harvard Square. The commentary of Bill O'Reilly about John Edwards at least had the issue on the front pages and on TV. For many in government the homeless is a non-issue, citizens of this great country who are mentally sick living in their cars does not get anyone votes. However, homeless veterans, even if it's one, let alone thousands, ought to cause governments to fall. A nation that does not care for its veterans does not deserve them. We cannot ever be truly great until all of us have a place to sleep and getting help for what makes us sick. If we continue to do nothing about our homeless and our homeless veterans then … WE SUCK. End of ex·cerpts. GOD BLESS ![]()

ky3.com - Rev. Rice pushes ahead with plans to help homeless veterans
Rev. Rice pushes ahead with plans to help homeless veterans | KY3 | Local Excerpts from the article SPRINGFIELD -- In honor of Independence Day, the Rev. Larry Rice is in the city handing out free goods this week to homeless veterans. The place where he's doing so, the former Social Security building on Jefferson Avenue a block north of Chestnut Expressway, set off political fireworks but the plans continue to move forward – for now. Putting up a fence isn't often seen as a peace offering but, by enclosing the future center for homeless veterans, Rice hopes it keeps scandal out too. "We went ahead on our own to put up such a fence to alleviate any worries of parents that might think people here would cross over to the swimming pool area,” said Rice, talking about the Springfield School District’s natatorium. The proximity of the center to Central High school is a major concern of the school district. City leaders also challenged Rice's use of the building, given to him for free after pledging to use it for programs to help homeless people. Both Springfield and the school district called on Senators Claire McCaskill and Kit Bond's offices to help plead their case. End of excerpts. It is truly how quick we forget about the sac·ri·fic·es that our men and women make.God Bless Rev Rice for the work he does in helping our homeless veterans. God Bless Us All ![]()
