Yes. Bush has lived down to all of the criticisms leveled at him when he first ran for office.
Hoover was labeled the worst president of the 20th century.
GWB will wear that label during the 21st century. And he deserves it.
The man is an utter disappointment in almost every way. He did a few things that were positive, but they are hard to find amongst his screw-ups.
He has a very transparent agenda. And his agenda is certain special interests and the extremely wealthy.

Myopic view of the world through the eyes of evangelical Christianity.
Utterly absurd, horribly damaging to the country.

But we like it up there and in the past we considered the modest premium in costs money well spent. This year, and probably going forward, is different though. The modest premium is becoming a stiff penalty due to both the unfavorable exchange rate and the 800 extra miles (round trip) of driving with gas costing more than if we filled the tank with Jameson's. So, the vote is still out.
Of course, that's what exchange rates are supposed to do. The dollar is down encouraging us and others to spend money here. So maybe we should take the hint and stay on this side of the border.
BTW Zip, as I've stated in many posts, I like most things about Canada and have said so many times here. It just seems strange that folks like yourself that are so frequent and constant in showing your distain for us and our country, still like to visit. If you're so unhappy with your downtrodden neighbors to the south, just stay home. Why make yourself miserable. There is really nothing you folks need us for. Absolutely nothing.

Read some of my past posts youbet.
My father worked for a U.S. railway in Southern ON.
My mother still gets a monthly cheque from the U.S. Railway Retirement Board. The exchange rate at par for her means a lot less $$$$.
I think there will be a union between Canada and the U.S. by the end of the century, and I'm on record as favouring it.
It is Bush that I can't stand. And your defending him says more about you than me.

Read my post. No defense of Bush from me. I just moaned about you, once again, chiming in on problems of no concern to you.

Except for a few months, he's the only President of the 21st century. There's plenty of time for someone worse to come along. Have you seen "Idiocracy"?

That concept is one of the factors I'm trying to figure out with Obama. While he isn't out of the same evangelical mold as Bush, there are many similarities. Regular attendance at church. Uses clergy as advisors. Political roots and support linked to a somewhat fundamentalist religious background. I'm not saying we'd get the same results as with Bush, just that I'm concerned that religious factors have been and continue to be an important part of his life. His religious life mingles with his public life more so than with Hillary or McCain who seem to be the "go to church on Easter and Christmas and smile for photo ops" types.

Strange sense of humour.
There's no point in giving believers in the 'Ugly American' stereotype more ammunition.

Interesting response, and I see your point. Have you given any thought to the opposite side of that coin? Could it be that you and Zipper are giving believers in the 'Elitist, Condescending Canadian' stereotype more ammunition?

Sadly, that is so, so true! There seems to be upward bounds on how good a president can be, but certainly no downward bounds! If you're saying we have plenty of time and opportunity to do worse, I'm afraid you're right......... This is America, we can find a way!

Well, like the o/p I posted a link to a (relevant) newspaper article. I also called you on a deliberately offensive 'joke'. I don't see how those posts were either elitist or condescending (or necessarily Canadian).
I will let Zipper speak for himself.

I was speaking of the subtle tone of your posts in general, not necessarily what you posted when taking me to task for something you obviously don't think funny. Here's one small example - even your avatar 'looks down' on others.

Since my response was obviously aimed at Zipper and you decided to intervene on his behalf, it would appear too late to do that.

That said, I'm willing to agree that my joke about not knowing any of the names of Canadian PM's may have been insensitive to those who live in Canada. But that doesn't mean it wasn't funny...

It's a naval recruiting poster (yes, I was in the navy). The condescension is so subtle that I wasn't even aware of it! Not a very persuasive example.

I didn't intervene on his behalf, or even on behalf of Canadians generally. I commented on behalf of thinking people everywhere [see generally STAFF EDITORIAL: Racist jokes a sign of prejudice, not humor - Opinion].
Ignorance of other cultures is regrettable. Boastful ignorance is shameful.
The same, lame 'joke' excuse can be and has been used for virtually all offensive (e.g., racist, sexist, homophobic etc.) remarks.
If I were in your shoes, I would just unreservedly apologize for a thoughtless coment (which we all make from time to time), and we could then move on.
