I've heard of 19th century campaigns that used big words that sound bad to people who don't have a large vocabulary.

In one specific example there was a campaign in the late 1800s where one candidate described the other as a "thespian" who had a brother that was "practicing celibacy".

The interesting thing is that Adams and Jefferson reconciled after both retired from public life, became good friends and corresponded regularly with each other in their old age.

Just shows what politics does to people.

Well said. What politics does to people ... and what people do to politics.

According to David McCullough's wonderful bio of Adams, they were pretty close to best friends at the end.
I've always been struck at the incredible coincidence of their deaths on the same day -- the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
