pop up ads

I am using google chrome as my browser on my laptop and have a samsung phone, but the phone is a new device to me as I have had a smart[hone for a very short time. I am getting lot of popup ads on both chrome and android. is there some software (preferably free ) that you use to slow it down or get rid of the popups? thanks

I am using Chrome also and it seems like lately and not every time when I choose a favorite to open another tab will open a web site. that i have to close.
