Sorry, didn't see your request for info. I live in Hawaii Kai on the island of Oahu. Primarily, I like Oahu because it has most of the advantages of the other islands (beauty, great beaches, even deserted beaches). It also has Honolulu which is a medium sized city (half million or so). With Honolulu so near, one never feels particularly isolated or bored. I love the other islands, but I could not live on them. It would be too confining as there is not much to do.
I like the Hawaii Kai area because it is in the rain shadow of the Koolau mountain range. While we do get rain, it is much less than on the windward side of the island. It is less cloudy and "feels" cooler because of lower humidity.
I am sure RPSIX Spectrum Income can be replicated by index funds- it will be tough because some of what it holds is a small percentage (like real estate bonds, emerging markets bonds) and if an individual were doing that it might be a 25k or 10k position in a 450k portfolio. Gives you more to manage than anything else.
PRPFX- Permanent Portfolio is probably tougher to use with index funds, because the fund manager is managing tax payouts as well as the assets on hand- this fund has really low turnover and low tax liability year in and year out. The fund also owns physical gold (not gold mining stocks or gold futures, but gold coins and gold itself) and I don't know of an index which HOLDS gold (I know of some which invest in gold, but holding gold and investing in gold might be 2 different things).
