Golf is the greatest game !
I got hooked about 20-some years ago and that's pretty much all I want to do now. So my soon-to-be early retirement will include more golf.
I have made 6 trips to the home of golf, Scotland, and would like to make another, but the exchange rate is horrible. But, would like to play Whistling Straits this summer if I can get a tee time - maybe sometime before the PGA Tournament.
As far as golf taking too long - it only takes too long when you have slow play in front of you. And, it's a great stress reliever, something I needed when working.

I noted with interest in 2003 that Tiger Woods' caddy, who presumably is barely surviving on 10% of Tiger's purses, was in the top 10 money earners of professional golfers.

So a guy who doesn't get to swing a club, and who can't even walk the course unless escorted by his employer, is out-earning 95% of the "professionals".

I learned how to SCUBA dive with my wife and I sold my golf clubs. I learned how to surf and I never looked back.

Again, if you are already a low 70's player, disregard.  If not, do a lot of range work, and you will enjoy the game
a hell of a lot more you thought possible.

I have been a bogey golfer all my life and have also only played on public courses. It costs me about $40 with cart to play 18 holes. So currently the cost to play a round of golf is $40/90 strokes = $0.44/stoke. If I get down to a scratch handicap the cost is $40/72 strokes = $0.56/stroke. I lose value by becoming better. Of course, I could take a mulligan on every hole to make up for it!

You're better than me; right now I'm a 9.9 hdcp.
I don't play for money; that just puts the pressure on.
I do it for the enjoyment; even playing with strangers is fun. Some of the most interesting people I've ever met, were strangers that I have been paired up with.
As far as practicing - I go to the range regularly, not so much as to improve, but so the the muscles don't forget what the swing is all about. Mentally, going more than 2 weeks without either playing or going to the range tends to drive me crazy.
What makes golf so great is the fact that most can play it well into their 70's.

I love golf but last played in 1976! Suspect I'm a bit
rusty . I gave it up because I was too busy to get
as proficient as I thought I should be, and also I had
too many hobbies. Maybe I will take it up again when I
am too old to ride the motorcycle.

One positive aspect of golf vs surfing is that you rarely get attacked by great white sharks while golfing. That might make the game more interesting though. I liked that old NFL commercial where they had "full tackle football". Funny.

My dad sure enjoys his golfing, and I dont mind it much, although I cant help but wonder about the sanity of hitting a small ball, going to look for it, and if you manage to find it, hitting it again.
