SOUTHERN TEXAS ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
SUMMER FIELD SCHOOL AT QUIHI, TEXAS
The Southern Texas Archaeological Association (STAA) announces a summer field
school in Medina County, Texas, near the historic settlement of Quihi. The STAA
has an excellent opportunity to conduct test excavations, site survey and collection documentation in a region in which very little archaeological research has ever been
done. Dates for the field school are July 24-August 1, 2004. Applications for field
school are available on the STAA website (www.staa.org) or by contacting Skip
Kennedy at skipken@satx.rr.com (Phone: 210-273-3426). All participants must be
current, 2004 paid members of the STAA.
Fieldwork will be focused at two prehistoric sites, 41ME132 and 41ME133. Both
sites have important data related to the chronology of prehistoric occupation in the
Quihi Creek drainage. Artifacts from one site go back to at least 10,000 years ago,
with recurring occupation continuing up to early Historic times. The STAA project
area also offers opportunities to survey and record new sites and to document some
local artifact collections. Thus, the field school can provide the participant with
experience in several aspects of archaeological research.
Located north of US Highway 90, between Hondo and Castroville, the Quihi locale
is easily accessible. Camping areas will be assigned at the field school headquarters,
located in a renovated historic home with necessary facilities. Participants may purchase
meals through a catering arrangement made by the STAA. Motels are available in
Hondo and Castroville, as are numerous restaurants and stores.
The field school will be directed by Dr. Thomas R. Hester. David Calame will oversee
the site survey program (830-665-9758). Skip Kennedy is providing logistical and operations oversight. Sue Turner will direct the laboratory work.
