Types of REITs

I'm looking at diversification into REITs - it's been awhile since I studied this, but if I remember correctly, there are different types of REITs - ones that lend money versus actually owning real estate. Can someone clarify this for me? Is an "equity" REIT one that owns property?

Yes, equity REITs are the type that own property like
office buildings, shoping centers, apartments etc.

Vanguard's REIT index fund holds all equity REITs.

Personally, I would not touch a mortgage type REIT
without a great deal of research.
