The way I see it, those of you who have had so much merriment taking shots (however well deserved) at the Congressional leadership over the past few years are going to have to see what it feels like to be on the receiving end. It's only fair that you allow the (I want to get the label correct here...) red state redneck conservative neo...phytes have their fun just like you guys did.

Dang, this morning on the way in to work gas prices had shot up another $0.01 cents. Stupid democrats are trying to push their green agenda by making gas unaffordable for the common workers like me!?!! It's a vast left wing conspiracy undertaken by democraps. Can't they do anything right?

Well, with those guys I got this sickening involuntary urge to wrap fingers around necks feeling....
I fear the incoming dem leads are firebrands and not statesman/woman and have poisoned the relationship with Bush so it will be hard to sell their agenda....they will also screwup the 2008 election for the dems ...I read about how some conservatives were hoping for dems to take control so people can get a taste of what Pelosi is like - then there will be a backlash to get the Repubs back in 08...

You must be joking. The incoming democrats are by and large as centrist as the party has been in a long time. The only reason they get tarred with all this nonsense is that the far right nutzoids that have been running the country into the ditch couldn't get the incoming democrats to give them a "Ja Vold!" despite several years of trying. As for poisoning the relationship with Bush: Ha! The rethuglicans decided they weren't interested in bipartisanship and did things exclusively their way for years, even going so far as to threaten to take away the fiibuster because they wanted no input from the other side. You are looking at the wrong side of the aisle for those who pissed in the punchbowl of bipartisanship.
If the Chief Monkey is very lucky, the incoming Congress will choose to let bygones be bygones (for now...) and try to work together with him for the good of the country. People like Pelosi, Reid and Rangel have publicly said that they think attempts at revenge favored by some of their junior colleagues would be misuided. So Bush had better smile when he talks to the new Congressional leaders, because the alternative isn't that far away and it will be an accomplishment f the current top Democrats manage to restrain the party's impulse for paybacks.

Well, Rangel and Frank will be in charge of some of the most important committees, so I was under the impression that they are among they new leadership. I think Levin will be in charge of a committee, too.

Sadly, while I had hoped the Dems would take the high road and work on issues that truly need to be resolved for all of our good, they do seem to be unable to let go of their revenge and payback focus.

Time will tell................Dems will get a honeymoon for a few months, but the American voter is not to be triffled with. Look at the GOP, they thought John Q Public would allow the GOP to work on agendas that were not conservative, and they got what they deserved...........

yes, and its important that they serve on those committees....picked them as examples of people who are proven at working with the otherside...I'm not aware of others who could step up that don't have key spots on key committees, but I'm hoping..otherwise maybe Nancy and Reid will surprise me....brewer12345 said:

For several years, there hasn't been any opportunity for democrats to work with the other side because rethuglicans wouldn't share. So don't talk to me about how the democrats don't have leaders who can't work with the other side. As I said, Bush should be damned happy that the first act of the new Congress isn't a round of subpoenas.

Hey be nice! I'm trying to work with you here in either a partisan or bipartisan way - I'm not sure anymore!...I'm not talking to you about "how the democrats don't have leaders who can't work with the other side" I've mentioned a few already....Obama and some of new crop look promising also...

Although I’d describe myself as a political pessimist, I will admit to a little optimism regarding the current situation. Two reasons:
1. Maybe the Dems recall how the Repubs shot themselves in the foot in the ’98 midterm elections. The voters were sick of the Repubs politics of personal destruction so instead of bolstering the GOP majority, the voters sent more Dems to Washington. If the Dems focus on retribution rather than governing, they face the real possibility of screwing themselves in 2008. I sense the voters are fed up with the backstabbing circus we’ve had to endure the past few years and will reward the Dems in 2008 if they will lead and not attack.
2. Bush has two more years to try to create some sort of positive legacy for his Presidency. Believe it or not, he really did create an atmosphere of bipartisan cooperation when he was governor. He’s got one last chance to try to salvage something, and I hope what I heard from him yesterday is an indication he’s going to move in the right correct direction.

It's not at all obvious to me that a Charles Rangel run Ways and Means Committee is more friendly to the people on this board than a Bill Thomas one. Rangel, in the past, has been fairly outspoken in favor of eliminating the current tax treatment for capital gains and dividends, which benefit most, if not all, of us.
