A friend sent me a link to this google video:

Ideas Worth Spreading

It shows changes in world-wide demographic trends over the last 40 years. Bottom line: the gap between "third world" and "western" nations is closing in many ways. And watch out -- here comes China!

Great presentation, but I was most impressed with the data visualization tool he used. It's available from google here:

Thanks wab, this is fascinating stuff. I agree the graphics are very cool, but the trends he talked about were the most interesting for me. Sort of blew up some preconceived notions.

A cursory look at the home website gapminder.org promises hours of interesting study; probably shouldn't be doing it while chained to the desk at work. ;)
 
All of this goes to show we had it wrong all along. Children don't cause insanity, they cause short life expectancies. :D
