This is recognized from earlier studies, but it may not be quite that simple: many believe that the larger the polyp the more likely they are to be discovered.
It could be that if the "missed" polyps are predominanly small (under 10 mm) no harm may come to the patient. Few will become cancer, and of those that do, it may take 5-10 years (and they may be picked up next time when they are still benign but bigger).
I am confident that a single colonoscopy misses some polyps, and that some gain can be achieved by slowing down. But I am less sure as to whether these missed polyps result in any significant increase in the incidence of colon cancer. That is an unknown and would be very difficult to research.
