well we put an offer in on a home in tanglwood estates in lake wallenpaupack pa and it was accepted.

we are still in shock that we did it, but we did.

it will serve as a vacation home for us and the kids until we are ready to pull the plug and retire from life in new york in a few years

How are the property taxes there? Can't be worse than NY. Some possible RE budget savings right off the bat.

Congrats on the house.

Ha! Small world. My cousin has a place nearby (Masthope) that is just a nice little bungalow in the woods. We really l ike the area and since prices seem to be coming down out there I am toying with the idea of looking for a place. What did you buy? How much (if you don't mind saying)? Any clue on maintenance/carry costs?

I like the area, but I guess I would avoid actual Lake Wallenpaupack itself because the power boats would drive me nuts. How close are you?

Congratulations ,
Maybe you'll run into Dwight Schute since that's were they have the office outing .

That's where DW and I looked about five years ago. Very pretty, and the housing was pretty inexpensive compared to the DC area. We were there in summer and were told winters can be pretty bad, but we're not around here in the winter. I remember when I was researching PA, it's pretty but the employment situation was grim because much of the state was in older industries. As I recall, every county except one had lost population over the last two census. Seemed to me a bad place to look for work but a great place to retire.

JUST FAR ENOUGH AWAY NOT TO HEAR THEM. we are actually in tanglwood estates north. what a great area and we fell in love with a 2 year old house. as luck has it the couple has to re-locate and were entertaining reasonable offers even though they were to the low side

2900 per year vs 12,000 here in new york

Nice move mathjack. DW and I spent a week there many years ago and loved it.

If we have any regrets (I don't) that we picked our "getaway" in NC its that its too far away from NY. If we picked a place in eastern PA we could be there in a few hours instead of 11 hours... its a hike.

Math, you live in Queens right? 12000K taxes in Queens, sounds more like Nassau county with the 200K cops.

we have a city income tax which when coupled with real estate taxes and the water sewer charge works out the same as nassau county pretty much. in pa we have neither.

the 200k cops is suffolk county.

just checked out some of the houses for sale there online. cute houses, beautiful scenery. i had never considered living up north again but if i was going to do the next 5 years of summer travel to get out of florida, i suppose i could consider moving north and traveling away in winter instead.

we used to spend some vacations in the poconos on working ranches. i used to love horsebackriding there. but haven't been up there since i was a little kid. is an area like that near civilization so that a single person would have things to do?

Welcome to Pennsylvania...I am not far from you...about an hour north of Scranton. The entire Poconos area is experiencing a lot of growth and now with the casino at Mount Airy, who knows. Lake Wallenpaupack is a very nice area, I am sure you will enjoy it. Congrats!
