Pole Dancing-fun exercise for the Ladies

So here is my official report on the pole dancing birthday party festivities from Saturday night!

First off, this stuff is difficult--there were a couple of former cheerleaders in my group of 8 friends (the group ranged from 25 to 45 years of age) and they fared best of all. We are all sore today from using muscles that don't get a lot of work in your typical cardio workout. The instructor was unbelievably fit, needless to say! I think the calorie burn for us was a wash due to the wine, though!

But what a blast--if there is a dance studio near you, you gotta try it--it was a huge hit with my girlfriends. Good, clean fun and one of the best birthday parties I've ever had! We brought wine and food with us in the limo to the studio and spent two hours learning the moves and laughing at each other! We also got a brief lap dancing lesson that was hilarious--I'm pretty sure that my relationship with my friend Kelly will never be the same after we were partnered up for this session!

Again, none of us were very talented, but it didn't matter--just getting in there and trying it was loads of fun. I highly recommend it to the ladies--and your partners will consider it a great investment!

My daughter has been taking pole dancing classes for about a year now and is 'addicted' to the 'sport'....

she bought a pole and stage for her dining room area and set up a full length mirror to watch herself do the moves.

She doesn't eat much...

I don't think there's anything funny about this. The pole is like an altar to many people. They have warm remembrances of the pole and events near it. Would it be "fun" to get exercise by doing chin-ups on a crucifix? Maybe do some crunches on the prayer rug?

Not for me. This coarsening and desecration of what we have traditionally held as hallowed symbols of the important spiritual underpinning of our society must stop.

Okay heres the deal. Anyone wants to do this but is lacking the appropriate audience, I will volunteer to make the ultimate sacrifice and watch.

It is pretty amazing to me how the stripper/porno culture has become acceptable over time. Marshell Mcclullen said "people become what they observe" - so true.

I always wonder what happened to the womens lib movement. I think it began to be killed when Janet Reno declined to prosecute porno when it moved began to flurish in the 90s and Bill Clinton killed it with Monica (this is not a political comment on his administration). When the women libs didn't speak up against it it showed the movement was really dead.

Chris Rock said a father's job was to "Keep his daughter off the pole"

I think this stripper culture has become the new way to subjugate young women in the USA.

Glad to hear that others think this is harmless fun--I know my husband and the DHs of my friends were wild about the idea! I think you would be surprised at the women who are interested in this stuff--and what a great transition for these instructors if they were "on the pole" in a former life! I know the instructors where we went were former cheerleaders and gymnasts, and boy did it show!

I'm pretty uncoordinated, so no high heels for me--yet! They suggest that you start out barefoot or in socks first. Apparently the workout in heels is super good for the legs, though. And if I danced in front of a mirror much, I'd eat a lot less, too!

And Dex, I'm nowhere near a libber, so I wouldn't know much about female oppression--but I'm pretty darned sure that no club would hire me at this point! So I've not been subjugated yet!

Sarah, I am glad you had lots of fun.

But I am with Dex, the idea of stripper poles, and lap dancing for fun, and workouts in heels being good for the legs is just a bit bothersome to me. Dex, being a feminist is a bit like being a liberal, the term is out of fashion. So I do try to make the point every once in a while that I am both.

Sarah, don't be too sure that you are not a "libber." I assume that you want women to have the same opportunities as men in the workplace and to be paid no different just because they are women.

Martha, that is a very interesting take on the situation. I would have thought there would be resistance to this sort of thing from the conservative, religious front, but not from the "free to burn the bra" liberal side. Food for thought.

I am not entirely sure that my background of "right to work" doesn't make me think that anyone who chooses to dance for a living, does in fact choose it. It seems like these kinds of dance studios are targeting regular women who want to learn an exercise regimen that is just slightly risque.

And you are right, I want to be paid regardless of my gender. But I find that easy in my life, because I don't have children. I think that women with kids are treated differently, and not just by men. I am a big fan of that "right to choose" your work, and if I weren't treated well, I'd go somewhere else. But I am not so naive to think that everyone has that ability/opportunity.
