Bloomington IN.

There is a possibility that some friends of mine may move there. Anyone on here have any information about Bloomington? Just wondering what type of place it is. Housing cost? Weather? Entertainment? Anything about the place would be nice to know.

It's been years since I've been to Bloomington (saw B.B. King and Roy Buchanan there), but it is a relatively small city with a big university (IU), and the cultural amenities that go with it.

Winter is cold, but not brutal. Probably not too much snow. Summer is fairly hot and humid.

Scenery is good, with Brown County close by for hiking and covered bridges and such. Monroe Lake is close by. Indiananpolis is maybe 40 miles away, up Hwy 37.

If one feels a need to live in Indiana, they could do worse...

I would have to second everything HFWR had to say about the area. Don't know if this is important to you, but IU does influence the town to a great extent. Employment, attitudes, mix of people, etc.

A school like Purdue - up the state a hundred miles - has much less influence on its surrounding towns of Lafayette/West Lafayette. But, if living in a "college" town appeals to you, Bloomington is such a town.

Don't know specific costs, but Indiana - and most of the midwest - is generally lower in housing costs than either coast. Indianapolis is known for relatively low "big-city" housing prices. So Bloomington should be very affordable in relative terms. You should be able to find sources on the net which compare living costs.

I like the Bloomington area. Scenic, university-related culture, major city an easy hour drive away, relatively low cost of living, moderate weather (usually) and attracting a growing number of retirees. And the Bill Monroe Blue Grass Festival is held nearby every spring! Whats not to like?

DW and I meet some Hanover cronies at Brown Cty State Park every spring. We rent 3 -4 cabins and party for a few days. Of course, it's now been almost 40 yrs since graduation so where we once had a full keg delivered, and used that to wash down gallons of Jack, we now carry in a few six-packs! Let me put it this way...... We can still remember being a rowdy crowd! That's pretty good for geezers, no?

The Bean Blossom festival is a fabulous event.
