Straight Lines in Stock Graph

Just curious, in a graph like this

why are there regions in which the prices over time follow a straight line?
 
I'm *guessing* that they just had no data in that time interval for some reason, and had to draw a line between two fairly distant points where that happens.

That kinda looks like it. There is no volume data under those straight lines.
 
That's what I figured. However, the lines are a little jagged. Perhaps they don't want those sections to look too different from the rest of the graph.
