Need Help Rotating an .AVI File

A friend took 5 or 6 minutes of my partner and I dancing tango this afternoon with his Canon Camera. The image appreared right side up when he shot it, and also when we viewed it on the camera screen, but when he downloaded it it is rotated (-90) degrees.

I brought it home on a DVD. I copied the file onto my HD, and I can view it with Windows Media Player or Quicktime, but I can't figure out how to rotate it upright, short of rotating my screen. :)

I have no experience with this kind of thing. What can I do?

Here's an easy solution.

here's the file type that you are dealing with
AVI File Extension - Open .AVI files
so you have the right players selected for Windows.
I searched on my 'puter for any typ of .avi file so I could try to troubleshoot, but I have none to try a solution on. Some of the other FIRE techies who visit here should be by shortly.
 
I found an .avi file to experiment with.

Under START menu, ALL PROGRAMS, look for Windows Movie Maker. Load that program, open a New Project, select your video file, hit the Play arrow button, and see how it plays. Still playing sideways?
Under Tools, there is a 90 degree rotation tool that may help. It's hard to explain here. But you can create a new project, use the 90 degree rotation tool effect on it, and maybe that will work versus turning your head sideways. :(
I would ask your friend to double check his software settings for the program that created the DVD, and have him make you another DVD without the unintended rotation effect.

Freebird, I really appreciate your help. I must be doing something wrong. I can open my dance file in Windows Movie maker. It plays in Movie maker, but horizontally. Then I click tools, effects, rotate 90 degrees, and my video disappears to be replaced by the orange red flower that is the image used in the effects section.

If I can manage to rotate it I will put it on You-tube and give y'all a llink. Might as well have some laughs. :)

Once it is in Windows Movie Maker, drag the AVI clip onto the timeline at the bottom of Windows Movie Maker, and make sure it is highlighted (click on it, if it's not). Then click:

Clip > Video > Video Effects

Select Rotate 90 in the left hand box.

Click Add to transfer Rotate 90 to the right hand box.

Then click OK and it will be rotated.

You can then save the rotated file, by clicking File > Save Movie File and following the prompts, and it will save the rotated clip as a WMV file.

I have Windows XP (with Movie Maker 5.1) but it should work in a similar way with a later version.

I did shave, but more Wrangler than Armani.

I have for the time being given up on editing. I had wanted to split it in the middle where the song changes.

It's a practice session,and it's all lead and follow (no choreographed sequences).

I need practice in looking smarter (which may be a lot to ask of myself :)); but I am pleased that I am have become a solid lead. My excellent partner is Lisbeth.

Nice. I'd have broken at least two of her bones and one of mine trying all that. My dancing skill are one of the reasons I play in the band.

Only for enthusiasts. All others struggle along in Italian shoes.

Be patient. This is only a practice session. Ha is yet to show us his Argentine steps with a rose between his teeth.

How about some royal waltz or perky chachacha?
