The Tainted Relic

This book is actually five short stories written by five different authors. It tells the story of a cursed medieval relic (a fragment of Christ's Cross) as it changes hands from that time to modern times. Being cursed, it appears to bring sadness, misfortune and death to anybody who possess it.

I enjoyed Martin Walker's Black Diamond. The Black Diamond is a prized truffle. This is part of Walker's Bruno French policeman series. The author knows a lot about the French country towns. The first 1/3 of the book sets the scene and was kind of boring but then it took off. Discussions of some of the French history involving Algeria and Vietnam.

I just finished reading Radical Sabbatical by Glen Tibaldeo and Laura Berger. Currently reading Escape from the Ordinary by Julie Bradley. Both books are helping me get in the mood for retirement in a month.

Just completed World Gone By, a 'Mob Genre' novel by one of my favorite writers, Dennis Lehane:

A psychologically, morally complex novel of blood, crime, passion, and vengeance, set in Cuba and Ybor City, Florida, during World War II, in which Joe Coughlin must confront the cost of his criminal past and present.

Ten years have passed since Joe Coughlin’s enemies killed his wife and destroyed his empire, and much has changed. Prohibition is dead, the world is at war again, and Joe’s son, Tomás, is growing up. Now, the former crime kingpin works as a consigliore to the Bartolo crime family, traveling between Tampa and Cuba, his wife’s homeland.

A master who moves in and out of the black, white, and Cuban underworlds, Joe effortlessly mixes with Tampa’s social elite, U.S. Naval intelligence, the Lansky-Luciano mob, and the mob-financed government of Fulgencio Batista. He has everything—money, power, a beautiful mistress, and anonymity.

But success cannot protect him from the dark truth of his past—and ultimately, the wages of a lifetime of sin will finally be paid in full.
